Ankle problems

Hello,
I sprained my left ankle 9 weeks ago. I never really took care of that sprain as I have 3 small kids and just powered through the pain in an ankle brace. Initially the sprain was not bad, but I feel that with all the activities I kept re-injuring it, because it progressively got worse. I was also never advised to do any physical therapy just given an ankle brace and told to come back if not better in 6-8 weeks....I still keep it in a brace. I have seen a couple of specialists and awaiting an MRI to further evaluate. Last week I stubbed my toe on my right foot (the good one) and in addition to compensating for the sprained ankle, I had to compensate for the toe as well. A couple of days after the toe injury, I started having pain on the side and top of my right foot with some swelling and tenderness. I feel like I might have extensor tendonitis from overusing and overcompensating for the other ankle. Has anyone with prolonged ankle sprain had overcompensating issues on the opposite foot? I am so frustrated. Also, anyone with extensor tendonitis that can share their experience and recovery time? Thank you.

Wow!! I could imagine the feeling you going through. I had the same sprained I did at work I step off a curve The Curve must have been like 9 inchs and my ankle got swollen it was all purple ( psychedelic color ) I didn't go to the ER!!! I went to the drugstore went over here in East Texas they had this patch don't remember the name I know briefly I think it was called Tigers patch for sprains and I put it on my ankle and by Sunday night I was fine with injury happened on Friday afternoon but I didn't put weight on it I stayed on the couch all weekend I know you got three small kids!!! And it's really difficult to have rest with small children running around!!! If it's been this long you still having pain that's a good thing you went to the doctor cuz all that walking around doing mother duties!!! You might probably re-injured it again!! Keep checking with your Doctor to see what are the results are!!! Kept posting what are the results!!! God bless you!!!

Hi Lilly,
You have my sympathies for what you are going through. I feel deeply for those unfortunates that have ankle injuries and still must lead active lives to support their families.
Depending on how severe your initial ankle sprain injuries were, and how much additional damage you may have incurred trying to 'power through' it all at all costs, your ankle may be quite compromised now.
The fact that you did not employ ankle sprain first aid and treatment (PRICE protocol) is a strike against you for sure, unfortunately.
You mentioned you are seeing specialists and had MRI imaging done, so that is a step in right direction. You will probably need all the help you can get from a competent and sympathetic foot and ankle specialist.
Not sure what kind of brace you are wearing but of course they are of all kinds of usefulness. The more flimsy ones are worthless. In any case, an ankle brace does not replace a CAM walking boot (which is likely what you needed from the start).
Best wishes.
