Ankle surgery

I am at 6 weeks after ankle surgery . I was supposed to have my 6 weeks appointment last Wednesday but it was cancelled because we had a hurricane on the way . I will see the doctor on Wednesday . I'm just feeling that maybe I'm not coming along as I should . I still have a lot of pain and swelling and I'm non-weight-bearing. I do have a boot. I have good days and bad days but sometimes the pain is still really bad and I would have thought by now that it would be better.

Hi I had ankle fusion 1 year ago this week. At 6 weeks don't expect too much. Its taken me a year for swelling to go down and to get used to all the hardware. Also dont be surprised if nerve pain and stingers start happening. Ankles take the longest to heal. Good luck

Thanks I think I've already started experiencing the stingers. I thought it would be a simple thing but from what I'm hearing it's not at all. wow a year! Oh well I guess it is what it is I don't know how I'm going to wear shoes I guess it is what it is I don't know how I'm going to wear shoes. I need to get back to work and I usually watch my grandkids which I haven't been able and I usually watch my grandkids which I haven't been able to do so it's affecting everybody financially

thank you so much. That does make me feel a little better. You are right it does take a toll on you mentally. I have gotten very depressed and I'm normally not that way. It just seems like it's never going to end. I hope you feel better soon and thank you so much

Six week is early, I was in lots of pain for a few months, even throbbing while elevating. My ankle still is not the same, 1-1/2 yr later. Long journey this ankle business.

Im just curious. I'm hearing similar comments from a couple of other people. How long before you were able to walk and also Drive? I actually broke it on July 3rd but the surgery wasn't until July 23rd. I think it puts me now at about 7 weeks. I was supposed to go last Wednesday but we had hurricane Dory and heading this way so they canceled it. excuse the misspelling I am speaking so it doesn't always come out right. Thanks so much for the info.

I didn’t get my cast off for 3 long months, then about 2 weeks later I started walking in the boot and driving too, since it was my left ankle, not my right used for driving. It’s just a much longer process of healing than you can explain to other people, and takes so much patience. I’m not in lots of pain now, it just feels funny and not great. I can move just fine on it, but nothing like before I broke it. I still take Motrin 800mg for the aches and pains. You will make lots of progress, just takes time.

Hi i was eight weeks non weightbaring and progressed fast once I was given permission to start to weigh bare so don't worry about how long it has been everyone progresses at different rates. The only thing I cant advise on is the pain. I was lucky and had very little pain through the whole process even breaking the ankle i thought i had hurt it alot less than I had. But at six weeks it is still early days in the whole recovery progress, im 14 weeks post op and still have a bit to go x

Thanks. Im glad to hear you r not having much pain. I go to the doctor tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to start putting some weight on it. mine has been pretty painful from the beginning but I do have good days and bad days. The last couple of days have been much better so I'm hoping that's a good sign. Good luck to you. I guess I'm about seven weeks post-op I guess I'm about 7 weeks post-op so

i was the same i had no pain after my surgery
3 weeks in a cast then cast off, stitches removed and given a boot with 25% weight bearing that was for another month
still no pain everyone said this was painful surgery but i guess i was fortunate
then i went to full weight bearing two weeks ago and boy does my ankle hurt now!
started PT last week have another appointment today
when it hurts really bad i just listen to my body and rest it
im driving cause it was my left foot and i can go grocery shopping on my own just need to use one of those motorized scooters to get around the store
once you begin to get a little independence back your mood is lifted
its a long recovery but at least we will recover i feel bad for folks that are in wheelchairs for life and after this experience ill never take walking fir granted again and have gained a whole new respect for people permanently handicapped

I have said the same thing. I tell myself when I start to feel sorry for myself to be grateful that it is not something serious or permanent
Thanks for the comments. It does help to know that others have gone through the same thing and that I'm not crazy thank you. lol

I agree, I will never again take walking or curbs (the ridiculous cause of my injury) for granted. I started to feel more normal once i could weight bare and the highlight was being able to make myself coffee and carry it to another room while alone in the house. We will all get there , it is comforting to know there are other people who understand what you are going through... I had people tell me I was milking my injury because I refused to go against the doctors and walk on my leg before being told, also was told by one lady that she broke both her kneecaps at once and was still walking around .... and so she didn't understand way i wasn't . Frustrating but hey ho... Everyone has an opinion 😃

my son was in a motorcycle accident when he was 21 broke both knees it took one full year for him to fully recover
at 8 weeks he could start to bear some weight but it was a long recovery
hes in his 40's now
im 67 and up until my accident i was walking 4 miles a day plus waitressing two nights a week
so this incident has really changed my life and all i want is to get back to normal

I don’t know what type of surgery you had. I had an ankle replacement almost 11 weeks ago and continue to have swelling and tenderness and lots of pain but I am able to walk without an assistive device. I started to walk without a walker at seven weeks. It just takes time to heal. Hang in there!!
