Ankle swelling

I had a hip replacement 12 days ago... I am walking around the house independently only using one crutch on the stairs and two when i go outside.

I had no ankle/foot swelling until about 4 days ago and now they are so tight its getting painful, I was told my the surgeon that I couldn't elevate my operated leg , so I am looking for suggestions on how to get rid of this swelling. I cant put an ice pack on due to my foot being on the floor. Ive done all the exercises they recommend but nothing works

    Sorry to read this, Barbara.

My feet and legs still become swollen and it's four months since my THR. (I am waiting for the THR for the other hip). Mine are fine in the morning after I have been lying in bed overnight.

How do you sleep? Why did the surgeon advise you not to elevate your leg? Was this just a temporary precaution?

It might be worth asking the surgeon, physio or nurse for advice if you haven't already.

swelling is a usual issue after surgery. keep your leg up on a stool higher than your heart up on pillows is the recommended treatment and ice the ankle . in time the swelling will go down. this is what happens when stocking is not worn after surgery to prevent swelling. some surgeons recommend them others dont. I also used a air pressure wrap battery operated to apply pressure/message on the op leg. amazon has them very helpful and reasonably prices. I found it to help relieve pain and pressure from swelling.
