Ankylosing Spondylitis progression

When I have a flare the pain in my SJ, lower back and nowadays ribs & upper back.

But when not it a flare the stiffness and pain is more often than not in my ribs & upper back rather than my lower back & SJ (Though those are stiff/painful in the morning or after driving for some time).

In the past the pain used to be almost solely in the lower back & SJ.

Is this how the disease spreads?

"When I have a flare the pain in my SJ, lower back and nowadays ribs & upper back" is where the pain is localised."

AS is rooted in the autoimmune system. It can effect numerous parts of the body. For me, the inflammation is generally localized in a particular areas(s) for a period, then I may have a symptom free period. It usually will later localize in another area for a bit. And my lower back usually hurts everyday. My disease is not spreading or getting worse.

For instance, I spent 2 years with on/off iritis and lower back pain. Next, the sciatica and neck were bothered. Simply, my autoimmune system sends messages to my brain to increase inflammation, and where the inflammation happens can vary. It often will occur in a vulnerable area (following injury, etc.) Generally, it effects most in certain areas. You can find lists of those body parts on reputable AS websites.

There are various blood tests your rheumatologist can order which measures the diseases activity. It is possible for the inflammation to become farther from normal ranges. Blood tests over time measure the diseases activity. If you're interested, you can learn about the tests and contact your physician for lab results.

I hope this is helpful. Take care.
