Another UTI

Posted , 3 users are following.

I had my last UTI in August 2016. After at least 3 different antibiotics it finally went. I suffered quite badly with it, back and abdomen pain. I never get pain when passing water or stinging. I only know i have them from strong back pain.

I am waiting to see GP at the moment, should I ask to go on a low dose antibiotic given the fact that it's only been 4months since my last one?

I am over fanatical about being clean so wonder if I should also have further tests to check my bladder?

I am sorry you are going through all of that.  First off have they cultured to see what bacteria is causing the UTI?  Did they see WBC in the urine?  Secondly, before requesting constant use of antibiotics (as they in themselves cause other issues) I would get further tests to see what is causing frequent UTI's, if you are premenopausal, or in menopause you may need some support like an estroil cream to beef back up the walls and vulva because as we get older things think out and make it more prone for these types of infections.  A pelvic ultra sound would be great seeing you have strong back pain, they can also measure the bladder and check for abormalities and measure post void (meaning is urine still lingering inside after you urinate).  I have heard women who have been on long term low does antibiotics and it has been successful, but be prepared for yeast infections and a weakend immune system as antibiotics wipe out all the good bacteria as well as the bad, and we need the good bacteria to ward off the bad.  Lastly it doesn't matter how clean we are, organisms are microscopic and they love warm dark places and they can grow out of our control without knowing.  Sometimes when we are too clean we mess up the PH balance and that is a no no when trying to avoid infections.

      Hi Linda

I have to take a sample to the hospital tomorrow. I have told the GP that I don't want to start antibiotics until the culture comes back.

I use Vagifem as I suffer with vaginal atrophy

I had a pelvic ultrasound in September and all was OK (but that didn't check my bladder) I will ask for one of these.

      Thanks for your advice

It sounds like you have done all the right precautions.  Once you find out the culture you know what you are dealing with.  Some bacterias are hard to treat, or they can come and go if they are mild.  D-mannose helps to prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder, but really works more for ecoli bacteria.  Most complete pelvic ultra sounds check the bladder, you may need to be referred to a urologist as they may need to do other tests to ensure everything is working proper and no blockages.

      Thank you Linda I will/

I am having real trouble trying to control the back pain. Paracetamol/Ibuprofen don't touch it. 2 x15mg Codeine phosphate just takes the edge off t.

      Trying a Naproxen today.

    Hi Amanda,

Sorry to hear that you are suffering. I'm like you, couldn't get rid of my uti. I have to self catheterise so it puts me at more risk, Have you tried taking something called D Mannose? A lot of people find this helpful in your situation.

    Regards,
