Anterior versus posterior

Posted , 14 users are following.

Have read, researched, discussed with doctors, the benefits of various surgery. Husband pushing posterior. I am anxious about recovery of posterior and outcomes of anterior.

Opinions, thoughts. Welcome.

Merry Christmas.

If you are in the UK and going the NHS route you may not have a choice. Most surgeons practice what they are used to and most don't offer anterior.

From my understanding althythe recovery with anterior is shorter with less restrictions there is a chance of nerve damage. Inwont lie it's a big operation BUT the restrictions are not for long. Whichever route you chose make sure you are 100% happy with your surgeon- that gives you the best outcome I think.

    Merry Christmas

I agree most NHS surgeons do posterior. Restrictions. Initially 12 weeks although surgeon will decrease some of those when you have 6week checkup. This is because of risk of dislocation. Anterior I've heard has quicker recovery and less restrictions.

i had posterior and got nerve damage which resolved with a short course of meds. So it's not just reserved to anterior.

My surgeon was brill. Check them out  and find out how many they have done and what their revision rate is.

I had the anterior approach and had nearly no restrictions and healing time has been quick!

Hi, anterior is much less invasive, no muscles or tendons cut, they are just moved aside. Posterior, muscles cut, much longer recovery and I should imagine much more painful recovery for sitting etc, plus scar half the size......hope that helps

Yes in UK you get no choice . I had posterior . Very big scar , very big pain in my experience !

I think go with what your surgeon suggests. You need him to be very experienced with the procedure. My surgeon was great, I had posterior, small scar, out on day 2, all very straightforward. Didn't have any real pain, kept waiting for it to start and it didn't. (Took all my pain meds, just a bit achy at times.) 90° rule is a bit irritating, and you normally can't drive for 6 weeks, but I was v mobile on my crutches. (Should add that apart from my hip, I was fit and healthy.) Good luck!

Go with what your surgeon has the experience and recommends. My Surgeon in the USA is 72 and old school. Restrictions suck, but pretty much pain free after 18 days when staples came out. Have a great looking manly scar. Been one year now and it is great

I was referred to my surgeon by my chiropractor.  My first THR was approx 4 yrs ago, no real pain after about 2 days.  I was back to work at 7 wks job has bending & lfting.  Back to playing sports after 3-4 months.  Posterior technique, I didnt even know about the anterior technique at that time.

I had my other hip done in July 2016. Same surgeon. Right hip this time.  I was driving after 2 weeks.  No post surpery pain.  I waited 12 weeks this time to go back to work, I found out I should have waited 12 weeks with my first THR.  I was back to playing sports at exactly 12 weeks.  i used a walker for a week maybe then I used a can for about 6 weeks even though I didnt really need it.

    Good Luckbiggrin

    Wow you are all so

Different ! Had posterior right THR October 8 Th this year and not been pain free for one day . Worse pain than before and it moves around . Nor has good nights sleep for weeks and 400 mg ibuprofen and 400 mg paracetamol every 4 hrs hardly touched it . Can drive . Cannot touch my toes any more or put socks on . Bending is hard . One foot longer than the other . A massive 12 inch long scar still so tender and sore ... I wonder sometimes if I have had the same Op ......,sad(

Hi Hazel, all I can think of is that is still early day for us. I can't do toes or socks yet either and have pain in opposite hip more, I was anterior on 24 oct, so patience is required I think sad

Hope it's just a case of patience Anna. Seeing surgeon tomorrow to discuss it . If they had warned you fair enough but met so many people who are pain free at my stage ...

    hi ccariello,

I have not much to add to previous posts ... Both are major surgeries where join will be removed, bone cut and new hardware placed ...

Anterior will not cut muscles, tendons etc but seperate them instead - less to repair ...

    what does your surgeon prefer?

please come back here and let us know the outcome ..

    big warm hug

I live in southwest Utah where you can find surgeons that will do either technique.I think most places in the USA are similar.I believe you choose the surgery that best fits your tolerance/risk avoidance/etc then find the best surgeon in our local community or you travel.

At this point I will likely choose anterior method.

good luck and please keep in touch ...

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and peaceful 2017
