Anti-biotics for RA treatment??

Posted , 4 users are following.

My sister has had "Inflammatory arthritis" for nearly 2 years...she has all the symptoms of RA...she was rushed into hospital with gallstone pain, and is still in there.  My question is...they discovered she has an infection, and has been intraveniously given anti-biotics....she has no pain or stiffness now with the RA.!!.....has anyone else found this has happened.....is there a connection with infection and RA, and is it a possible treatment?  There may be some of you who have known this to happen....I welcome any suggestions, it`s just wonderful for her to be pain free!!  nothing else works for her.......thank you fr any response...

    Hi,

Interestingly enough, my rheumatologist put me on antibiotics for 3+ months when I was first diagnosed.  I was first on doxycycline for 21 days and now on menacycline for 3 months.  I did some research and it seems that studies have shown that those antibiotics have been shown to decrease the symptoms of RA.  I still have pain and swelling but not nearly as bad as when it first started.

I heard of some people with RA respond very well to the antibiotics for the disease . I have RA and antibiotics don't seem to work for me, I am on Enbrel right now if it works for her she should speak with her rheumatologist about the antibiotic treatment. I wish her a quick recovery!

Oh my gosh yes. I was put on Augmentin for dental infection in my mouth, and was instructed to go off from the prednisone and biologic due to the infection. It took 95% of the RA pain away. There is a condition called Reactive RA that reacts basically only when theres an ongoing infection. I believe that a certain type of bacteria in the body induces systemic infection, that then triggers different kinds of RA. My own theory from many different exp ive personally had. There is an antibiotic that is safe to prescribe daily called minocycline that i tried that was not strong enough or the right antibiotic to help like the Augmentin.

Thanks for all the replies...Yes, I do believe you are right about the bacteria in the body....She dosen`t have a very "receptive" rheumy I`m afraid, very stuck in her ways!....My sister was released from hospital yesterday, and before she left, she asked the doctor about feeling so well (pain and stiffness free!) he said antibiotics get rid of inflammation, which is probably what has happened. She has finished them now, and is absolutely dreading the symptoms returning as you can imagine...I will research (good old google) reactive arthritis for her, so she can do battle with her rheumy if she needs to!!  Thanks again, and best wishes.

Hi, the truth is that antibiotics target microorganisms such as bacteria, fungus, and parasites! Not inflammation!! Inflammation is a by-product of these things, and not what antibiotics treat! Medications like mobic, and naproxin treat inflammation. This is why i believe bacteria, fungus and parasites in the body is what triggers RA..which then attacks and spreads systemically..when the body is attacked by growing fungus, bacteria or parasites, infection sets in, which then causes inflammation. Does this make sense to you too? Traditional Doctors dont look for underlying causes to RA..they are treating symptoms.. Holistic or functional doctors look into causes!

Yes, I absolutely agree with you...my sister was given Methotexate, after the second tablet she was violently ill...and it caused gallstones to move, and ended up in hospital, of course they won`t admit it, but the reading for her liver after taking it were off the scale, so she is now frightened of medication!  Steroid injections are working less and less because of "tolerance"......It`s a minefield, but i do believe also we know our bodies better than anyone, especially as you say, tradional doctors...will keep posting if any joy with anything! Thanks again...

Wow, this is very interesting!! To think you can stop a flare with antibiotics smile I will have to bring that up to my doctor! I have some at home that I may just try for the tendonitis. It won't go away!!!
