Anti Reflux and HH repair surgery next week

Posted , 16 users are following.

Hi all ,

Its nearly here , my op is on Wednesday 8th June , Im still a bit nervous about it , but reading all the posts on this forum over the past year it has eased my worries a tiny tad ...

My symptoms I would say are livable with but in the long term I am PPI dependant , at the moment Esomeprazole 40mg Ranitadine when required which is most days and Gaviscon .

My symtoms include,

Phlegm 24/7

Sneezing most days

Runny nose

Itchy ears

Slight chest pain

Nausea if I eat a little too much , most days

Bloated burping and flatulance

Burning sensation in my belly and when stressed burning in my throat

Horrible smell in my nose all the time

Some foods tasteless

I can feel nautiuos one minute then shaking with hunger next

I dont know if this is so but Im putting my lack of wanting to be intamit with my partner down on my symtoms list too whether due to feeling yuck most of the time or due to effects of long term on PPI , I have been taking PPI for about 15 years .

I still get all these symptoms while on the meds so I guess they are not 100% helping my Reflux .

I am 46 years old , Not overweight , Dont smoke , Drink a little .

I have had symtoms since I was a child , when I was a baby I would burp after my bottle feed and bring it all back up , then as i got a bit older I rember sitting up most nights believing I was going to vomit , i never did , into teenage and 20's I discovered Bicarbonated Soda , I used to make up a bottle of it every day and drink it thro the day mostly at night in bed.

Then about 15 years ago I got some chest pain and went to GP , they prescribed PPI , I tried Pantaprazole , Lantaprazole then Omeaprazole which I was on about 10 years , I had and endoscopy about 10 years ago which saw the sphinctor not closing properly and gastritus with tiny ulcers , last year I got fed up taking Omeprazole and went to GP , I asked for Nexium she said they were expensive so at the same time we discussed surgery , I got both Nexium on perscription and referral for surgery , The Nexium does work a little better than the Omeprazole but I still have symtoms .

I had to have endoscopy again which now has found the Hiatus Hernia as well as reflux , I also had 24hr PH test and Manomertry tests , which the hospital ( Royal Berkshire Reading) insist on having before considering surgery . All tests came back conclusive that I am a good candidate for the repair surgery , which happens wednesday next week ...

I will of course keep this forum up to date with proceedings after my op .

Regards to all and thank you everyone who has posted on here and helped me with my decision to have the op .

Margaret.

Well had my surgery on Sat 13th August.

I was lucky to be moved to first on operating list for the day.

There was 5 of us and surgeon list for that day.

He changed round his schedule at last min.

They apologised for making me rush to go to first but explain that he had just changed order last minute.

I spoke to my surgeon on Thursday 11th Aug.

I had the pre med for bloods on 10th August then got call later that day to say lab rejected my bloods as some one spelt

my name wrong on the first set the taken on the 29th Aug so didn't mat with cross match taken on 10th.

So had to do them again on 11th Aug .

He knew I wasn't happy about it and made me more nervous as I saw him and spoke to him say made me more nervous.

Sorry don't know what happened there.

I was only supposed to be in for day surgery but got sick from the anise tic so ended up having to have anti sick jab a drip and stay over night.

The staff were all very nice and kind .I was only oloud water till later then had smooth chicken soup.and someemail squash.

I was aloud to have shower next morning and the nurse showed me how to change dressing. She changed them all and check that I was OK.

My surgeon came back to see me before I was discharged. He told me to stay have some lunch may be poached fish or something like but no chips he laughed.

They didn't have any poached firs and wasn't sure if liked fish they had as was polak or Bream. So they did two poached eggs for me made sure chewed well like he told me and went down OK

      so was aloud home after.

Was a bit sore yesterday and very sleepy probably due that couldn't sleep very well.

Today was bit sore when got out bed but went off. I has pot custard that went down OK

Felt Hungary tried to see if could eat scrambled egg but that was a no go.

Had small pot Haagan Daze ice cream. That was OK belly felt better.

Made a bit of runny chocolate ready brek that was OK manage to eat that and stomach felt better think was bit hungry.

      Hi Zena,

It's all trail and error with what to eat in the first few days, make sure you have water to sip on throughout the day.

I found the fresh ready mashed potato good, a spoonful of that heated up with grated cheese and made sloppy with gravy went down quite well also without the gravy mix scrambled egg through it.

A lot of the food in the first couple of weeks is like weaning a baby.

Well done and keep up the good work :-)

Though the scrabbleday egg might been ok as had poched egg in hospital and thought simlier but got pain like heart burn and made me cough so gave up only had two teaspoons. The ice cream was OK and made up some chocolate readybrek with just 2 tablespoons readybrek to 150 ml milk so still really sloppy.went down ok so had again this morning. Thought then can gradually make it bit thicker or till get thicker then try other thicker food types thought maybe rushed to much as cought now again just bit phlem or tickle. Just felt needed something bit more filling .

zena      I had HH repair and Nisse....I could not eat at all for about a month but the first few weeks i was on clear everything.....broths, ice cream, jello, all liquids...Then graduated to thickened liquids only ..my husband would cook ground chicken boil a potato a carrot and put all in the blender with chicken broth and i would drink that for meals as they would vary the meats..even fish .  In between meals only  was i allowed to drink water....i was warned by dr not during a meal ...then when smoothies are tolerated then go to soft slippery...that was about 3 months for me.....it is a slow process and u will know when your ready as i would get it stuck in chest and had chest pains too....i then would get up walk and take a gas x to relieve pain....It is all process of elimination and patience  dont rush meats when able to eat they caused me difficulty for sometime.  It all takes time  I am now 5 mos. and doing well but still get the chest thing going on now and then....but it will all go in time as i am told...good luck and dont rush solids but do make sure u get nutrition put it all into smoothies an drink them...good luck  Liz

      Hi Zena,

It was a few weeks before I started to make the Readybrek thicker, stick to sloppy for now. And small spoonful at a time.

I'm at 10 weeks today, Im nowhere near 100% yet.. It's a long road but hopefully the end will be soon and eating better and no pain xx

      Hi Liz,

I'm 10 weeks today since op, at last the nausea feeling has subsided, my diet now isn't too varied but then it never had been, I'm trying to have little and often,

The last couple of days I've been having pain in my chest around the area of hh repair and going across my chest, is this part of the recovery Road? I still feel mostly in the morning as I have a little bit of phlegm.

I'm worried that I'm not taking it easy enough at work ( housekeeper) it quite physical, my ladies I clean for tell me to take it easy but that's not easy when I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

I've had a little alcohol, well I put a third of a can of ale into a glass topped up with soda water and sip over the evening. I've been out a couple of times and order off the kids menu and even that's a bit much to eat.

I'm not feeling as tired as I was when I went back to work 3 weeks ago.

Onwards and upwards as they say :-)

Thank you lady's for you help.

They think I was unlucky and having reaction to the anisetic. Managed some mash potates with bit gravy. Was nice . But was still sick later spent most night in loo trying to be sick. After taking prochorperazine 3mg buccal anti sickness tabs had fist bowl movement which was very painful but my daughter had got me some Lactose solution from pharmacy helped a bit. And took 5ml dose calpol all could stomach. Got the shakes and hot and cold while trying to be sick. Evenchly calmed down bit and got a bit sleep. Probably got some out my system a bit now so hopefully feel better and get on track. Had bit rash on stomach which still there still little itchy but not as red like pinhead rash . My Surgon called me as spoke to hospital for advice he said if dressing anoy you take them off as some people can have reactions to the sticky bits. She said was reallying sorry was feeling so bad and told him got anti sickness tab from my Dr he said try bear with if you can should some pass . He said he had done quite tight as had had very bad reflux before but he asked if could burp I said yes have been able to a bit he said that's good then . Hopefully you will feel better soon take it slowly I told him was going to try mash potates as felt need something be more in stomach he said try if not go back to water and stuff as before. If gets any worse or worried call his secretary and he will rebook and see what can be done he was so sweet and caring.

Feel lot beet compared with yesterday let hope last think mash potates helped but just need to get stuff out my system. Fingers crossed. I will keep you updated at least the mash makes belly feel bit better so hopefully that help as think with all liquid belly was feeling bit sloppy and making me nauseous. He said make Sure you keep sipping water and liquids too. Fingers crossed today be necessary day and feel better if do might have shower to cool rash down as a bit scared to just take dressing off and just leave them off.

      Hi Zena

Oh dear poor you, I managed to get through the nausea by telling myself I'm not going to be sick and keep sipping on water breath slow and deep. I tried not to be brave and had anti sickness tabs as many as I was allowed during the day mostly around food time, try staying still after eating so what you eat stays still in your stomach and not sloshing around which will make you queezy. Standing still for a few minutes after eating might help it to go down easier.

In the first couple of weeks don't be brave or a martyr, take pain meds and anti sickness tabs regular times throughout the day, move slowly and lots of rest.

I had a letter today from consultant which was a copy sent to GP I've officially been discharged from the hospital :-)

Hi Yesterday (Friday) started off OK unlike weather but just before 8pm started to feel sick again took anti sick tablether didn't seam to help much . But went off bit was going to have Grandson stay over as he's not problem but had to call his mum at 9.30pm say you better come pick him us as feel realy sick don't think be able to deal with it .Again from then on was trying to be sick all night till gone 1.31am didn't know what to do with my self as couldn't stop reaching but could bring any thing up .first was sweating then freezing shivering and legs shaking. Ended up calling 111 out hour Doctor for advise . They went through everything told me to try taking one of the Lanzopzol tabs used to take before and see if helps cause could be some reflux. And made appointment for me to see out hours doctor at 10am in the morning at Ashford hospital walk in centre. Took it managed to swallow ok as was bit worried if would be able to. Did seam to help Bit told me to try and rest fell asleep about hour after in Grandson single bed . Think managed best sleep had so far even though kept waking . Even managed to sleep on my right side a bit as could before made stomach feel we are delighted so been trying to sleep on back property up. Felt better this morning had shower and changed to walk to Hospital Walk in Center to see Dr gave myself plenty time to walk as was first day out since operation. Doctor was very nice exam end me and showed her the rash and told her change dressing yesterday only two middle ones looked as if they had Bleed again since nurse re dressed them and said I also noticed the rash have from under boobs down to stomach and round sides had now also appreciate as circle round first injection site I had when came back in room can't ramber what said it was for as wasn't realy fully with it. But know the anti sickness was put into right leg so wasn't that one. She said looks like tissue could be one causing you the problem as same rash and is circling the injection spot as bit brused as well. She gave me prescription for some different anti sickness tab Prochorperazine 5ml tab these have to swallow but only small and some Maalox plus also told me to take antihistamines tables to help with the itching. And if need take Lanzopzol. She said try drinking little but offten to help flush all out and if get any more problems and bad call ambulance. Feeling better now just bit sleepy. Hado to send daughter to get prescription for me as Tescos didn't have the Maalox in stock said be Tuesday before they would get so try another chemist as you need now realy to help with sickness. She managed to get for me . So much stuff to take now have to do a done list so don't forget to take them but spread out bit . So hereshe hopefully this will now works and can consatrate on getting better and not how to deal with the sickness. Made up fresh batch mash potates today and he did me 2 poched eggs after came back from Hospital. So at moment ok didn't feel bit qeeze but had bit mash took the Maalox as have to gap that and anti sickness tab .so fingers crossed . Was brave a re did dressings yesterday thought that what made me feel qwezy at first as laying flat trying to put them on so was easier to get right . But started from there when the on all night lol

Hope you are still doing OK

    Have Good weekend

    catch up with you later

      Hi Zena,

Gosh poor you, you are really having a rough time compared to me, I had nausea but no vomiting, I'm still laying on my back though at night, flatter than before op but my stomach feels odd when I roll over and a bit queezy so I will stay on my back for now.

It's a good feeling now to feel hungry instead of nausea, it's a long road but you will get there.

Did they tell you what degree of wrap they did? I had 270 degree done, they tried the 360 but decided it was too tight and loosen it..

      Best wishes.

His Margaret Not sure he just said he done quit tight as I had very bad reflux.

I will ask him when I see him again.

Yer I normally had stayed sleeping on my back proper up but last night felt so sick

Think music just turned over and it was comftabal so stayed like it but did bunch duvet

under side. Funny as he said why don't you sleep in the single bed easier to get out and lie on side.

I rambert telling him can't as feels really weird and make feel bit sick but think was so exhausted didn't car.

Best night sleep had so far even though keeps waking but think was deeper sleep.

Felt lot better this morning just bit slow an tiered.

Think walk did me good. Even though was bit Scarry on my own but had my phone so OK.

Had one those weitabix on go drink things took with me. As didn't want to rush eating anything.

She said good idea as asked if eaten. I had 2 poached egg he cooked me when got back.

Then later felt a bit qwerty so cooked some more mash potatoes.

Had a small bowl full ( like a small pie plate).

Fell asleep in the chair from probably 3pm till 8pm after taken in new mens.

    's

Feeling OK at moment hope lasts.

Still bit itchy with the rash but sure start going soon.

    Glade you doing OK

Sticking with the mash and poached eggs at moment as know that's OK and fills you up bit .

Once settles down might try something else.

Take care as they say one in million get the side effects and I just happened to be that unlucky one...

      Hi Zena,

I didn't venture out of the house for about 2 weeks, I just done a few slow laps of our little garden to begin, neighbours must have thought I had lost the plot. Then I went out for 10 minutes going further every day until I needed to walk to GP surgery and take my old meds back to chemist for disposal.

I slept quite a bit during the day but made sure I was up washed and dressed every day.

My plasters stayed on for a week and we're waterproof so I could shower, one cut had a steri strip on it, I asked consultant on my 6 weeks visit and he said it was where they put the gas in..

How is the pain across your shoulders? It must be cleared up now, did you have much pain there? I found it hard to breathe the first few days with it but wasn't worried as I knew what it was.

    Hi everyone

I have been reading your posts with great interest. So much info and so helpful. I had Laparoscopic Nissan Fundoplication surgery and a hiatal hernia repair a week ago. Two years of various tests and the hope I didn't need surgery climaxed with the op last Wednesday. I had so many symptoms the same as you ladies. So glad I have had the op and I am now on the liquid diet for 4 weeks and after that I can progress into mash, rice and fish etc

Off work for 4weeks and can drive hopefully after that too. Yes I have wind top and bottom...so to speak. Big worry is I can't poo!! Should I worry? I usually go everyday. I have taken a few doses of Lactulose nothing? Also when do I stop replacing the dressings?

    Thanks x

      Hi Patricia,

Well done for having the op and hope you are feeling OK.

The dressings I had were water proof and stayed put until I took them off myself after a week, I was able to have a shower a couple of days after op which was great, once I took them off I didn't replace them, my scars were nice and clean with no bleeding.

I think I had a poo after a few days, it's difficult when you know it's there but scared to push it out in case you do any damage to your stomach, it will come out eventually.

Best wishes with your recovery 😊

I was same as mags I had waterproof dressing on

they told me I could have a shower morning after

operation as was still in hospital nurse then request did dressings

and showed me how to do myself was okay manged to change them okay

I drove after 10 days as needed to go to my Doctors

to get another sick note and my Doctor was bit to far to walk.was okay

just take it easy at first.

I get bit more windy than before but think that something that

      come with it.

I was bit panicked because like self was alway regular with loo

But as your not eating as much there nothing much in your stomach so takes

Longer to build up enough for you body to get read of it .

Just go now every few days it will get better more you are able to eat.

      Good luck with you recovery

just don't rush it do what feels right for you.

Magret post have helped me a lot too.

Hope you get through it okay with out any problems

      Take care

      Hi Margaret

Thanks for that. I had waterproof ones on at first but took them off after 2nd shower. Think will have shower today and take the regular dressings off and see how I go. One of the five incisions is a bit painful the one by my navel. Otherwise I have noticed how much better I feel. No reflux ..coughing. I have lost 8lbs since op and looking forward to dropping more. I do have an arc of itchy rash on my side driving me mad! Not sure why I have that. Will keep you posted with the poo scenario! Reading all your posts has made me happier about a lot of things.

      Thanks Patsy

      Hi Zena

Thanks for all your info. I have had some visitors over the last few days and it's knocked me out a bit. One of my friends wanted to pick me up and meet the girls for a coffee but too early. My friend brought her daughter 18mths ...into everything my son is 21 nearly had forgotten what it was like totally wore me out! Think have to just do what I think. Listen to my body. Did a few jobs around house on Monday think I thought I was superwoman! Still into my 2nd week now so the only way is up!

      Best wishes

      Hi Patsy

It has now been one week since my op and I have had to change my dressings after each shower as they are not waterproof.

I was told I could get a bath after two weeks so assume the dressings can come off then. I am on antibiotics at the moment as I have an infection in the wound just above my belly button but all other are great with a couple just looking like little scratches.

I had a 360 wrap as I had the most horrific cough before surgery which seems to have gone but I am still throat clearing a bit after food so hope this stops eventually.

I've lost 10lbs since surgery and it's thanks to posts like these that I decided to goahead with the op.

Wishing you well with your recovery

Hi Louise thanks for replying. I've taken my dressings off but sore as rubbing against my leggings. I have one of my husbands tshirts on as loose. Straightened my hair today which has made me feel really good. Thinking may have to put dressings back on a couple of the incisions but will see. Would like to stop co codamol but need it at night. Still worried about the fact no poo!!?? Cannot wait weeks til on the sloppy diet ....what if I don't then??

      Thanks
