PMR for 5 years. Was at 7.5. Felt great. Took Antibiotic and it wiped out steriods. . Woke up and hip pain so bad had to use crutches to walk. Upped steriods to 20mg -no pain. However use of crutches impacted my left hand. so swollen had to have ring cut off. Throbbing at night wakes me up . Have tried 30mg in am Helps pain- no throbbing. hand still swollen. Trying also 10mg at night. By 5am throbbing back. Doing PT.
Increase Steriods to get under contol???

I think you really need to speak to your doctors - it isn't a good idea to use pred willy nilly to manage inflammation without knowing what is causing it even though it will help the pain. There isn't an interaction between antibiotics and steroids that "wipes out steroids" - they are often used together to achieve a better and faster result. It is possible the infection is causing a flare of the PMR but it shouldn't need you to go that high to manage it. The reason behind it needs to be investigated.

Have had PMR 5 years and not many problems. Lift Weights, ride bike, play golf-quite active. Only problem is have had a couple UTI's each year. Working on that with Urologist. Didn't happen at first after taking antibiotic but last two times as soon as I take the antibiotic I get up next day and horrendous pain in hip. Up steroids and pain goes away. However last time also left me with TMJ. Saw a chiropractor and he took care of that. This time has left me with painful left swollen hand (may have waited too long to have ring cut off). If antibiotic not wiping out steroids could it be the infection. Thanks

You may need a more vigorous and longer treatment. There is some research online but I found an article in The Guardian which might be of interest. Google: Rise in persistent UTIs could be linked to antibiotics crackdown.

I assume your UTIs are culture-proven? Because a lot of patients with PMR and/or pred have problems with interstitial cystitis. Also calcium supplements may lead to cystitis under certain conditions.
What antibiotic is it? Some can cause joint pain. But this sounds a complex problem - at least the urologist is involved.

You might want to lessen PT and other strengthening activities that can cause PMR pain. Too much too soon caused a flare during my PT.

If you are near midlife when female dryness occurs the urinary system suffers from atrophy. Since my doctor prescribed estriol to that spot I never more have urinary tract issues. This is the only estrogen which doesn t go into breast tissue- allowed by my oncologist.
