Antibiotics before dental cleanings, colonoscopies etc.

I was told at my 14 week checkup that I will need to take a single dose of a strong antibiotic 1 hour before dental cleaning for a lifetime. I know doctors differ in this, some 2 years but gave me a lifetime. What have others been told?

Thanks, Deb from US

I am in US too and was told a lifetime as well. My mom in another state told same thing. My two cents - I'd rather be safe than sorry. And to have to take a few antibiotics to ensure no future terrible issues - that's something easy enough to do. Mom also said she knew someone who forgot and she went into a coma - don't know the specifics.

Also keep in mind it may differ not only by country and Doctor but also prosthetic  type.

I was also told antibiotics before dental care for life. i wondered if the doctor or the dentist was "in charge" of this. as in who prescribes....

I called my doctor he gave me first prescription then I took bottle to dentist he wrote it all down so I can call either doctor or dentist. I had to call doctor to see how long I had to take them and also told dentist and he wrote in my record.
