Anxiety?

Not sure if this is anxiety or not. I go to bed really tired but when I get to the nodding off part, my brain starts racing. I hear deafeningly loud noises in my head like a sudden explosion or crash. I get loud voices roaring at me menacingly. My body tightens up, my legs are like springs then I jump right off the surface of the bed as they explode upwards at a ridiculous speed. My stomach starts to tremble and shake, my heart speeds up and becomes erratic and my breathing is laboured. I get about an hour of sleep each night. I am exhausted. Tried valerian caps but no good really. I am a 70 year old male. Wonder if anyone can advise on any of this? Thanks.

sorry you are going through this. Do you have a history of anxiety? If so that most likely explains what’s going on. Or if you don’t have a history of anxiety but have been going through things lately that are causing some stress that could also be a reason. I am in my 60s and I’ve had anxiety my entire life but it seems like it’s gotten worse. I thought it would be over and done with by this time. It’s very frustrating.
First of all, when have you had your last complete physical check up? Sometimes people have too low or too high electrolytes such as calcium, potassium or sodium. That is an easy fix.
i can completely relate to the racing thoughts, the noises in the hood her speeding up and labored breathing. A lot of people on this site can also relate to that because we all have anxiety. sounds like you also may have had some panic. Discuss this with your doctor and see what he or she recommends. Maybe they want to do a couple of tests, maybe some lab work just to check things out for your peace of mind.
But for now, before you go to bed, make sure you haven’t had any caffeine, a little exercise during the day might help you sleep better at night,.
You could also listen to some soothing nature Sounds, or relaxing meditation for anxiety or for sleep. You can find these on YouTube there are hundreds of them. I do this every night and I fall asleep before they are over with.
One last thing is it’s very important to learn how to breathe properly with anxiety. Proper breathing will lower the heart rate and relax everything!
You can also find this on YouTube when you search for mindfulness breathing exercises. Or breathing exercises for anxiety. I do hope you feel better. Hopefully it won’t continue . take care! ❤

Thank you for your reply. I have had previous problems with anxiety. I was addicted to diazepam and ativan for 36 years. I spent 3 years coming off them which was a nightmare. Been drug-free for 7 years now and was fine until a couple of months ago. I have a h. pylori infection and diabetes type 2 which do not help. I've had a constant dull ache in the middle of my forehead for a couple of months which gets worse when I try to sleep. I was told last year the arteries around my heart had narrowed and have had some arrythmia and palpitations at times. I was putting a lot of it down to ageing but I don't know. I will try the music tonight. Thank you.

when you were told last year that the arteries around your heart were narrow, did the doctor say when you should have it rechecked? that’s my suggestion just to make sure things are OK.

I haven't seen my doc since nearly a year now.
