Hello all! This is my 1st post and I just wanted to ask people who suffer with cfs like me if they have the same problems as me. When I was 16 I had glandular fever I was off school for 3 months and since then I'm now 24 I've never been fully the same as before. I got diagnosed with cfs last year after all this time! I usually have 5 months out of the year where I'm bed bound, the other 7 months I have to "pace" myself which I find really hard when I've missed out on so much whilst been in bed I want to see my friends, family etc. I've been bed bound again for 5 weeks up to now and for the first time really my anxiety is out of control, I find sitting in doctors for my appointments unbearable, I feel like I'm going to faint. I can't bear my friends to come and see me because my anxiety is that bad. Anyone else had this problem and any advice for me?? Thank you xx

Hi there "Silly." Yes, I've been there with horrible anxiety. It started about 6 months after my ME/CFS diagnosis several years ago. I learned that anxiety is a very common problem with this illness, because of what it does organically to your system. I tried antidepressants, but they soon stopped working. Then I tried Ativan, which is an anti-anxiety med. It seemed like a miracle at first. Not only did my anxiety lessen; I started feeling less ill. Then, after several months, I had to take more and more for it to help. Then my anxiety started getting worse and worse. So several months ago, I went off the med, and my anxiety lessened greatly. I tried several other anti-anxiety drugs that just made me worse. So I started meditating. That has helped enormously. So first thing is to look at your're meds, if you're taking any. Next, I highly recommend meditation. Yoga or tai chi might also be good, but I don't have the energy to do either of these, which I had practiced before I got ill. You might all do some deep-breating exercises. I'm sure you could Google that on the Internet.

Anxiety was one of my main symptoms when all this started 20 years ago. Infact i was diagnosed with GAD for 15 of toughs years. I only got diagnosed with CFS last year after a major relapse that left me with chronic nerve pain and bed bound. The anxiety can take over your life and be so disabling that you dont want to do anything. Meds do help. Have you tried Propanolol its used to treat anxiety as it binds the adrenalin in your system so reduces you symptoms quickly and with few side effects. Its not habit forming and can be taken as you need it.  I have used it for 20 years on and off and has proved a life saver, allowing me to get out and have some sort of a normal life at times when i have been really unwell.  I started with my problem at 24 and am now almost 46 ... there is hope.. with time you find ways to cope and deal with things and the right meds help. I also take a tiny dose of ametriptyline  5mg.. really such a small does should have no effect but it helps with sleep, anxiety, stress and also my nerve pain. At time when my symptoms get bad i do increase it, but always make sure i bring it back down when I’m feeling better, that way you dont end up in the spiral of having to take more and more to stay in the same place. I’ve been on that for almost 5 years and have found its made my life so much easier. If its interfering with your life so much then you need help, there is nothing wrong with meds to just give you that helping hand to get started. Meditation is also good, but its not for everyone, as most people with this condition find it almost impossible to relax enough to get any benefit from it.  Just dont think you are alone because you are not. There are so many of us out here that are affected in just the same way smile
