Anxiety learning to drive

Hi

I'm new on here and was hoping for some advice. For a couple of months I've been learning to drive. I'm anxious at these times but I am getting better behind the wheel and do even enjoy it at times. My problem is that despite, this on days when I have a lesson I spend the whole day with it niggling at the back of my mind and a general feeling of dread. Then if something comes up and it is cancelled (one week i was ill and last time the car broke before she arrived) I feel so relieved but then guilty because I DO want to learn. My driving instructor knows I'm anxious and is very patient. Last week she said it might take me a bit longer to learn and that's fine. But this kind of bugged me because it just seems to highlight my anxiety is getting in the way.

Has anyone been in this situation or has any advice?

Thanks for reading!

you’re going to be OK. Take one day at a time and try not to overthink this. You have a very patient instructor which is great.

Take as long as you need to feel comfortable driving. Before you know it, you will be done with the Lessons . Even after that you can drive with somebody else so you feel comfortable for a while.

One day you will look back on this as just another lesson in life.

I failed my first driving test because I could not parallel park. However, it was a great lesson for me because I practiced and practiced parallel parking and became really good at it!

when you get anxious, just slow down your mind and take some nice long slow deep breath‘s and think of some of the things I wrote here. happy driving! ❤
