Anxiety or real physical symptoms?

I'm at the point where I'm not sure what to make of anything I feel.  I've had chronic pain in my neck and back for years but always been able to manage it pretty well with a combination of naproxen and physical therapy.  Over the last year, I've had other symptoms and none of my doctors have been able to give me any solid answers as to why.  I had bloodwork done in September, and everything came back fine--white blood cell count, thyroid, etc. all normal.  Almost a month ago I started having really bad pain in the lower part of my abdomen.  Figuring it was a stomach bug, I let it go about a week and then finally saw the doctor, who found nothing, but recommended I see the OBGYN if it continued.  He found nothing, but recommended I see a GI specialist.  He suggested I stop taking both omeprazole and naproxen and see if the stomach pains let up, and if they don't then I should have an endoscopy and possibly colonoscopy.  I've been having back and leg pain and increased pain in my neck over the last week and my husband basically thinks it's all psychosomatic, i.e. I'm making myself sick thinking of all the things that might be wrong with me.  The GI doctor did suggest that stress could be playing a role in my symptoms.  So basically my question is, has anyone else had symptoms that were caused by stress and anxiety rather than a phsyical condition?  How do you reduce the stress and anxiety to even determine whether this is the case?  I'm just tired of feeling sick and tired all the time.

    Hi Viv!

The first thing that you need to know is that people with REAL physical syntoms don't go around questioning if they are real or if they are anxiety. Your mind is EXTREMELY powerful and it will make you FEEL real syntoms even when you are perfectly fine as several doctors can confirm. It is very common for people with anxiety feel this way, and they become Hypochondriac, they dig for days and months what else can it be wrong with them. The best thing for you to do is to have a little journal and keep track of these syntoms, write them down, that way when you look back, you can say "Wow a month ago I thought I had a brain tumor but I DON"T and I survided" this will help you understand that you can't control the chemical unbalances in yoru brain and you would just have to take deep breaths and wait until you feel better. I hear that having pets, doing excercise and becoming Vegan helps a lot ! bike rides and walks.

I really hope you feel better. Is there anything that a family meeber, a friend or partner could do to make you feel better? like if your mom cooked you your favorite meal, or someone went walking with you, or just hear you out?  Is there anything that would make you feel special or better, but you are too shy or embarressed to ask for it?

Viv I'm going through The same thing now. I am very stressed and I believe a little depressed and I think that it was caused by my health anxiety. I guess my answer to you is don't get a case of the "what if's "I know that's what I do all the time. It tends to make my mind wander and think awful things about my health

I have had every symptom from A to Z, all my tests were normal. Every symptom was anxiety and stress related.

Yes, many people get symptoms with no actual disease. its all brought on by stress!  Just remember one thing, symptoms brought on by anxiety and stress cannot hurt you! They feel weird and uncomfortable but that's it. What you have to do is learn how to calm down your brain. That is how I make my symptoms go away. Your symptoms are caused by an anxious brain. Over the years I have learned how to manage it.

     1.  what I did was first of all speak with a counselor. They see this on a daily basis and have the tools to help you manage this. Anxiety and stress is difficult to manage on our own and it really helps to talk to someone else. I keep going even when I start to feel  better because it's like a lifeline for me. Find a counselor you feel comfortable with. They help you see the anxiety for what it is and it help you manage it. If you ever really feel out of control and can't manage, seeing a counselor would be the first best step!

Remember....FEAR  stands for false evidence appearing real.   Which means sometimes when we have symptoms we think they are related to some terrifying disease, when in reality the odds are much higher that they are not.   Our minds  will go to the negative if we let it, so we must be in control.

Don't let fear take you over! Be a fighter for yourself!

     2.   Secondly, I go to Google or YouTube and look up audio meditations like one called I put in my earbuds and lie down and listen to them. They teach us to separate our thoughts that are negative from ourselves. This is something I think could really benefit you!! They completely  calm down my brain and body to the point where I almost feel like I'm floating. This is such a great thing to do for your brain and overall health. I do this a couple times a day  specially when I'm laying down to sleep.

There are MANY to choose from just pick the ones that you like. There's also positive affirmation ones that are helpful too. I play them in my car and while I take a walk. The more you listen to these the more your brain and subconscious will believe them and the better you will feel

it will just calm everything down when you  are having an acute anxiety attack

For panic attack, search you tube for "panic attack emergency "

    3.   Stay active! The worst thing you can do is sit around and think too much about all this. It will bring on more anxiety. As well as the symptoms. When I exercise my body completely calms down and the symptoms often go completely away.

    4.   Stay social! This helps keep your mind off your worries. The less you are alone the better at least until you manage your anxiety. Just do things that you enjoy.

When  feeling anxious or anytime you'd like, do deep breathing. Breathing through your nose for about five seconds and make sure your stomach rises. Then exhale through your lips as though you're blowing out a candle slowly for another five seconds. Do this as many times a day as you need to. It helps if you're lying down but you can also do  it's sitting.

Eat healthy! Stay away from processed foods especially sugar. Sugar has an inflammatory response including in the brain. This will just increase your anxiety and can possibly bring on depression.

The WORST thing you can do is react with fear and anxiety when you get symptoms. Then your brain shoots out a hormone to protect you but it can cause your heart to beat faster, which in turn creates more anxiety! A vicious circle.

I have had symptoms for many many years on and off and now I pretty much ignore them but I do try to stay as healthy as possible and do those things I listed above. The meditation audios really are excellent please try them and do them often !

You will be fine  once you get this under a little control.  You will have a long great life and you deserve peace and happiness.

Don't let fear take you over! Be a fighter for yourself. Fear is based on non reality.

Our minds  will go to the negative if we let it, so we must be in control.

    Hope you feel better soon!!

Have you seen a rheumatoid doctor? So much meds for so many years with your neck and now your belly is getting effected you are on acid reducers and the. naproxn? Maybe it is time to see a rhamroid doctor. They do different blood tests and different exams and can rule out arthritis issues, auto immune issues and fibromylegia. But they also check the orgams via bloodwork which is good especially after years and years of using oain pills all the time. Just saying its good to clear all that then you can focus in anxiety  related issues. You can have both physical oain and  an anxiety disorder. But let the dr. Diagnose this.. i have both ailments diagnoses and tangible and testable and i have anxiety and they can and do play off eaxh other as well.

    Hi

Im sorry you are having a hard time with physical symptoms. The list of symptoms associated with anxiety is endless! For example currently I have palpitations, tense neck and back muscles, tension headaches, gurgling tummy, bowel problems, depersonalisation, dizziness...I could go on lol

Stress and anxiety can also be a contibuting factor of irritable bowel syndrome which can cause stomach aches and feeling sick.

Have you spoken to a counsellor or tried medication for anxiety? Once the anxiety is under control then the symptoms associated will go too. I hope you start feeling better soon x
