Anxiety & palpitations

I've been taking Sertraline 50mg for 8 weeks today. I was prescribed it after two months of horrible anxiety symptoms which started with palpitations in October, I believe this started due to work stress and also in November my son was very ill and everything got too much and culminated in a panic attack at my desk at work. Needless to say, things spiralled downwards after that and in January was very low and nervously accepted help by way of antidepressants. After the initial first few weeks of awful side affects I've improved loads, my anxiety symptoms have greatly reduced and I've cut my hours of work to give me some 'breathing space'. However, the symptom that's still with me is the palpitations, mine are like the awareness of the heartbeat in my head/ears, it's when I sit quietly normally or in the early hours, deep breathing helps a bit. I'm worried that all the symptoms will return and I'll end up back where I was again. I don't really want to increase the Sertraline, I do have Propranalol to take if I need to but try not to as have managed without that for several weeks. Has anybody had the same experience with the palpitations and will they ever go away?

Hi. What I am about to tell you may not be what you want to hear, but from my personal experience, it seems to me that you need to increase your dose because 50mg is a very low dosage and usually it’s a dosage that helps you adjust to side effects as you increase to 100mg dose. If you are concerned that increasing your dose with lead to increased side effects it won’t be so bad since you’ve been on this med for a while. If are really resistant to increasing your dose, then you would have to rely on benzo’s and these fast-acting drugs, although offering short-term relief, can become addicting. Or try CBT or talk therapy or other vitamins/supplements or something (but you should check vitamins/supplements to ensure they don’t negative affect with the other meds you’re taking.) Take care.

Thanks for your reply GodsServant and advice, I think I'll give it another couple of weeks until going back to Drs unless things get worse before that. I don't really understand why I'm still having these palpitations as don't feel too stressed now, but my body is obviously saying otherwise.

I have the very same thing!! I have had for 25 years and just now started on Zoloft. It went away for about 10 years and came back with a vengeance last Dec. I felt great for about 6 months and now it's all creeping back. I increased to 75 mg this week and am having tingling in my lips and face. I sure hopes this goes away soon!!
