Anxiety problems

I have suffered with panic/anxiety attacks for over ten years on and off but last year I suffered what I thought was a heart attack, I was driving up the motorway when I felt a hot sensation going up my legs I then thought I was going to pass out so pulled over and struggled to breathe and felt weak I ended up in hospital and they said everything was ok and I'd just had a panic attack but since then I have been on citalopram and now fluoxetine but can't seem to shake the attacks off I constantly feel bloated and out of breathe. I get twitches where it feels like my heart as stopped and need to drink water.

Does anyone else have these symptoms and if so how are you coping with it.

Thanks Mick

You need to consider if possible what caused your Panic Attack in the first place.

If you suffer panic attacks when driving it is important you try and control your fears. These fears could be a danger to other road users. especially if you have problems beathing. Carry a flask of water when driving so you can pull in and take a drink.

Talk to your Doctor regaring this problem and hopefully you will gain support and move on

    Hi Mick

Anxiety has well over a hundred physical symptoms which stem from the anxiety which when the adrenalin gets pumping causes further anxiety.

How we react to the symptoms is key as it just gets in a cycle otherwise.

I had CBT and started mindful meditation after an accute time of anxiety and i had every symptom going.

With all the self help i did .. I am 95% better , i still get some of the physical symptoms and this is normal after an extended period of anxiety as the body becomes very sensitive and feels every little sensation, ache, pain, twinge etc which when not suffering with anxiety we just deal with.

This is why the mindul meditaion works so well as it teaches you to accept the feelings and concentrate on the breath.. Not to worry about yesterday and not to worry about the what if's of tomorrow.

I found most of the help i needed to get me started on You Tube ..

I typed in mindful meditation for beginners.. and i have not looked back since:

It wäs so much bettér than running to the doctors evéy week with yet a nother problem.

It actually feels empowering to let the anxiety know that i am bigger than it.

Have a look at Oxford University Studies on anxiety and depression the studies and trails they have done are very interesting and gives you a real insight into what and why it happens xx

    Good luck

Hi Mick, i had my 1st panic attack about 35 years ago . I remember it well as i was stood in a bus station, went all hot and felt like i was going to die. Horrible sensation, i continued to have them for about 12 months. They came on with no warning, usually at night time, i would go white and shake and be convinced i was dying. My doctor gave me some diazapam which helped and i managed to get over them by telling myself i would only take one if i felt the attack would not stop. I think knowing i could take one helped me get through the feeling of panic as i rarely needed one.  I used to avoid any crowded places after that and felt more secure in my home or car.  I have read that during an attack you hyperventilate (fast shallow breaths) so keep a paper bag handy and breathe in and out slowly into the bag. This returns carbon dioxide to your body and stops the lightheaded feeling. Good luck , Frances.
