Anxiety Symptoms

this is my first post to this discussion group. I’m rather excited to have found it and hope that I can find some answers to my diagnosis. First, I received a double bypass Almost 5 years ago. I was told that depression is common with cardiac patients following surgery. This summer however, I started having symptoms that I became very concerned about. The racing heartbeat, up to 120 BPM, numbness in left arm, sharp electric-type pains underneath my pectoral, Spasms in my larynx/ esophagus, occasional dizziness and confusion. The racing heartbeat had me go to emergency four times in the last six months but no indication of A heart attack. After a negative nuclear stress test, My most recent GP says that I am suffering anxiety… I am now on 20 mg citalopram for almost 2 weeks following four weeks at 10 mg that didn’t seem to help. I am hoping someone with similar background or symptoms (or both) can help me in understanding what the hell this is all about.

Hi,yes they are typical anxiety symptoms which causes distress. I've had the shooting pain from my right armpit down my arm which was horrible, and a bit painful for a second. If it was my left arm I would have been concerned. I've had anxiety long enough not to be concerned over symptoms but that one came out of the blue and wasn't pleasant.

10mg Citalopram is an ineffective dose generally but alright to start off with to get you used to the medication. 20mg is the minimum effective dose you are on now which you should now give plenty of time to work. That means at least 12 weeks. You will probably experience heightened anxiety in the beginning which makes things worse, but that will settle down in time, and side effects. Good luck.

thanks for replying… 12 weeks seems like forever now...I’ve been told anywhere between two weeks after starting 20 MG’s to six weeks… I really do appreciate your response… Thanks!
