Any advice on how to make the pain go away

My name is Diego and I’m 36 years old. My problem started about 2 years ago when all of a sudden I endure the worst pain I have ever felt, it’s was like if my ear was about to erupt, like if someone was stabbing me from the inside my ear.  I was in total shock didn’t know what to think of it.  I went to the Urgent care, they referred me to my dentist, went to my dentist and they referred me to a ENT and he was the one who said it was probably TMJ. Few days later I ended up in the ER cuz I couldn’t handle the pain, they also said it was TMJ. The pain went away for about a 1 1/2 into now the pain has came back.  2 weeks ago I went to the ER for the same pain, some people call it Electric shocks and I was getting those every 5 minutes.  This time the ER said it was TN and they gave me Norcos and Valium. I don’t like taking those pills together because they seem to mess my stomach up and plus my doctor didn’t want to give me Valium cuz he said I can get addicted.

    Hi Diego,

I'm sorry to hear your story. From personal experience valium and painkillers don't touch the pain at all. I suggest you find an experienced neurologist who understands TN and they will probably start you on some of the drugs used for epileptic problems. I know that sounds strange but they certainly do help some people. They do have side effects but anything that will help in my book is better than dealing with the dreadfully pain you suffer. I had it off and on for about 5 years. The time between attacks became shorter and lasted longer. I had surgery in February and I woke up and the pain was completely gone and I've been pain free since. Take care and let us know how you are doing. This is a very supportive group of people who have either gone or are going through it too.

      Thanks for your response wavedancer.

Tomorrow morning I'm calling couple neurologist I think might have experience with TN.   My dentist/facial pain doctor prescribe some medicine that's been working great so far called Tegretol but I know my body eventually will grow tolerance to it and I'm afraid when the time comes.   So far in the last couple weeks I've lost about 15lbs and 7 working days from work this terrible disease.  I'm staying positive and I know with the help of god and doctors I will get thru this.

Try moist heat on the side of the face several times a day and Advil.  This has really worked wonders for me. My symptoms are similar. I have had almost 3 weeks pain free. I hope this works for you.

Get a surgery, there are several to choose from. I did radio frequency surgery...no drugs, immediate relief, very low pain, no cutting into your body..they use a needle to stick in and burn the nerve. BUT, doesn't last more than a couple of years and part of your face is numb ( for me, my jaw was a bit numb making it hard to eat in front of people so I use a napkin to hide my mouth.  It's not perfect but it works for me.

Hi Diego - your pain sounds like mine except mine was in my tooth.  From what you posted, you are having  heck of a time getting diagnosed.  I also seen my dentist along with dental specialists.  I seen an Oral Facial Pain Specialist who ruled out TMJ.  My family doctor diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia from the beginning and she was right.  I would  strongly suggest you see a Neurologist.  Ask for an MRI with contrast which will show any compressions you may have in your brain area.  This is very important.  I have much more info to share and if you have any further questions, just let me know.  Best wishes.
