Think your Dr is the best one to answer that question. My dr said my clamp holding my bones together for a fussion could b removed in two years.

But this is my situation. Feel better. Patience!

    Hi Dawn.

I have 2 screws in the inner ankle bone too. Most of my pain is located here and I too can feel them digging in at times. Due to my bones and how they are now I doubt mine can ever be removed or I would lose a ball of bone which hasn't healed yet after 8 months. I say a ball of bone because that's what it looks like on the X-ray as I lost a lot of fragments when I shattered my ankle. I have much grief in this area. I have heard though that metal should only be removed if it's giving you trouble, usually around the 12 month mark.

Talk to the surgeon who performed the op.  It's early days yet and may be too soon to make any sort of decision, either by you or the doctor.

Not sure where you're located but in Australia guideline is 10 months. My left side where I had 18 stitches, plate and 9 screws has healed well, but the other side with wires being held together by 2 more screws causes me agony daily and I'm at 10 weeks post surgery, weight bearing. Patience and a good cam boot required. I have to purchase one myself as hospital selection very poor. Stay positive!

I broke two bones, inner and outer and have a plate and one screw on the inside. Saying this in comparison to your treatment, mine sounds fairly similar. When I started to hobble with the walker, it didn't feel good. I thought I felt the hardware. Id take a Percocet, wait a bit, than stand, walk and stretch for flexibility. I was surprise that I felt the discomfort that day but not the next. I thought that was excellent progress. After a work out my leg and ankle, at night they were restless and nerves seemed to be maybe reanimating ?

    Hope this helps

Have you broken both ankles?  If it is causing unusual pain they may take it out sooner.  It's been 7 months for me and the doctor said I could have the hardware out now.  I decided to wait 4 weeks mostly because I was not ready mentally to have surgery again.  I can understand why you want it out.  I had hardware in my elbow and it felt so much better once I had it out.  If they think your bone is well healed they will take it out sooner.  With my elbow they didn't want to take it out, but I insisted because of the pain.  My ankle is in pain from the hardware also, however I'm not as sure that it's all from the hardware.

Hi thank you for you're comments it's my left leg ankle tibia tibia the problem is the screws on my right side

Because I have delicate ankles the screw heads are prominent. And rub I can't put it down on it to go sleep my boot

When I put it on just rubs even padded around it I'm just praying it's healed enough

To be removed soon I can recover a lot faster then I hope you get better soon thank you Linda
