Hi Sadie.  It's a struggle to find meds that suit isn't it?  Tramadol definitely doesn't suit everybody - I can't take any opiates at all and Tramadol just makes me physically sick so it's a waste of time.  I've not tried amitriptyline as the long list of side effects put me off somewhat.  I've heard from others that it can cause sleep disturbance and that's the last thing I need!  I'm presently avoiding all pharmaceuticals for pain relief - most don't work and others cause more problems than they solve.  I've had some success with various self help remedies - warm baths with epsom salts (magnesium) are good.  Meditation techniques have also helped a lot - particularly with getting to sleep at night and relaxing and relieving pain.  I find my pain goes through the roof if I'm tense and if I can relieve the tension it's a lot more manageable.

I agree my pain is worse when I've been to work or I've had a stressful day but the pain is unbearable where I'm in tears and the pain killers do sod all ! Just need something to make me sleep and to kill this horrible pain

Oh Sadie, I really sympathise.  Chronic pain is the single most debilitating and life affecting problem ever!  As I said above, I find I cant take any of the usual opiates etc., but I do find paracetamol takes the edge of it.  The active ingredient is acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol in North America and is the most widely recommended pain relief for muscle pain, as it's not an anti inflammatory such as ibuprofen or aspirin.  Other than that it's going to be an uphill struggle unfortunately to find something that works for you personally.  Please do try anti stress techniques, they really will help in the interim.

I've just been given gabapentin to try bit scared to be honest to try them

Unfortunately I had a disastrous reaction to gabapentin, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and more frighteningly a complete loss of balance.  Allergic reaction no doubt and obviously this won't happen in everyone that takes it, so you may find it okay for you.

I can understand your concerns Sadie but you never know they may not have the same effect on you.  The side effects did stop quickly after I stopped taking them and dont seem to have had any lasting effects, so it might be worth risking it and then just ditching them if they do the same to you as with me and others.  Regrettably anything strong enough to cope with our fibro problems is probably going to have some kind of side effect - no win situation sad

Hi Sadie, whatever drugs you try, start on a low dose and titrate up to a level that you can comfortably manage any side effects. Drugs are a hit and miss thing, different people tolerate different drugs, obviously. I find the mix of drugs and meditation work the best. Best of luck hope you gain relief.
