Any food advice for more fiber??

Hi all, I've had a fissure for 4months now, I know it's not so long but it's ruining my everyday life. I took a lot of laxatives but also read it's not good for your stomach to take too many so I wanted to get natural natural laxatives through my food. I've completely changed my way of eating by only eating whole wheat pasta, rice and bread, fruits and veggies, stopped eating sugar, red meat, fries, burgers, any chocolate snacks and crisps. I started to eat oats, almonds, celery juice, chia seeds to help the BM. All of this but still the BM is not always soft, and so it's still very painful. Do you guys have any advice? What do you eat to have soft bowels? Thank you for the help!

I've been the same since Xmas. I now have made good progress. From never naturally going to the loo I now go everyday and it's soft.
All bran and fruit for breakfast. Beans on toast for lunch. Normal tea. I also make bran cake and snack on this. Lots of fruit. 3 litres of water. 4 Dulco ease. I'm actually making good progress. Hope this helps x

Hi Celine. It's really painful to hear this. I'm not an expert but I'll tell you what helped me. Try to take out onion and garlic from your diet as it makes your body temperature hot which is not good for you atm. Eat more liquid based diet. Breads are not a healthy option. Eat more fruits, bean soup and rice. Keep your diet simple. Drink loads of water thats very important. Hope it helps you. Take care.

Hi lovely, try psyllium husk powder. It is a high fibre supplement powder that draws water into the intestines which adds bulk and makes stools softer. You can buy it online but i would get it from a local health food shop to make sure what you are getting is good quality.
Great that you are eating chia seeds they are amazing for the gut. I definitely recommend trying a chia pudding there are lots of recipes for these online and it involves rehydrating the seeds and it's just a delicious fibre filled breakfast.
In terms of fruits and veggies, keep the skin on as the fibre is in the skin, and stay away from cruciferous and raw veg as they are hard to digest.
Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! The recommended is 8 glasses a day but actually it goes by your weight, height and activity level. I drink 3 litres minimum a day. You can check online how much you should be drinking the site i used was slender kitchen.
I hope this helps but if not movicol is a very gentle laxative that should definitely get things moving you can get it from the pharmacy.

Thank you all so much for your help! I've always been drinking about 2.5l of water a day so I keep this going. I've heard of chia pudding it sounds amazing! I had no idea that garlic and onions could do that, I'll definitely make a change on that and also reduce the bread.. I find it difficult sometimes as I loooove food so much, I usually eat anything and love eating out and trying new dishes so this is a bit of a challenge for me but I want this to work!

hello Celine
good job changing your diet. It takes a while for the body to adapt to new diet.
Lots of water helps, fruits and vegetable.
Oats has lots of fibre. I added a menjool date and dry raisins.
Also magnesium supplememt at night before bed, help with sleep and soft stool.
A spoon of olive oil is recommended to keep everything good.
Try different thing and it will heal.
best of luck
GL

Hi Celine. Keep a diary of what you eat because some things that you think are good for you, may not be. If you have even slight intolerance to some foods it can throw out your stool softness. For example I cannot eat beans, chia, flaxseed(flax oil is OK), uncooked cabbage, and other things. I also have issues with lentils. This has been confirmed by a dietician study. I'd recommend consulting a dietician who will start with a food diary to see how things progress through you. They will also want to know the results at the other end using the Bristol Stool Chart, so keep a record of that too. It can be a real trial and error situation but you'll get there.
Good luck!
PS I find omega oils help. I'm currently using "Udo's Blend" but there are others.

Thank you for the advice! I did start a diary of what I eat 2 weeks ago and it helps me understand what is good or not for me. I never heard of the Bristol stool chart but will have a look I just started to keep a record of that too and I'm also thinking of seeing a dietician to help me. So many things to do and change in your everyday life to go through this!

Hi Celine.
I eat bran and oat cereal with fruit and almond milk in the am.I eat bean and vegetable soup in the pm (usually with some ground beef or chicken cooked in for protein and flavor). In between or later in the evening I snack on fatty substances like avocado or peanut butter.(sometimes I sneak in a few cookies too)
Since doing this diet I have soft bulky stools and do not require additional fiber or drugs.
Hope this helps.

take magnesium citrate or oxide supplements. they are the perfect stool softeners. do not take more than the recommended amount and you can use them long term.
also don't eat white flour foods or anything that is constipating for you
add kiwis, pears, prunes, flax seed to your diet
find a good balance between your fibre intake and water intake. too much fibre can bulk up the stool too big, and too much water causes loss of electrolytes which can cause constipation.
