Any help re pre and post operation for removal of ovarian cyst

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi everyone.  As some of you know I will (hopefully, if I can get rid of my throat infection) be having a 9cm cycst removed with both fallopin tubes and ovaries on Friday 14th November.  I have read a some very useful information on here and I don't know what I would have done without everyone's support, so thank you.

But I wonder if anyone has any tips that made their life easier both pre and post op?

I will probably have to stay in overnight and have to have a light breakfast before 7.00am on the day before the op (what is a light breakfast?) and only clear liquids (plus jelly) on the day before the op, what did people drink?

Also I have to take 4 Bisocodyl tablets the morning before - I have IBS and the outcome of this concerns me. One would be bad for me but 4?Has anyone else been in this situation?

How did you cope in the week leading up to the op?

What did you take into hospital on the day of the op and what did you pack for after?  Presumably you need two separate bags? (I've been told to only take dressing gown, slippers and toiletries in on the day (what toiletries?)

How did you manage the pain and was there anything you did that made your life easier once home?

Sorry for all the questions, but I was rushed through the pre-op because they were running late and I had been booked in for a lung function test, so I didn't have time to ask many questions.

When you go in hospital the anaethetist will come to you and explain your options.  She told me about the spinal and said I wouldn't be in any pain after the operation and she was right, I recovered very quickly although you can't feel your legs for a few hours after. lol  I had a catheter as I wasn't allowed out of bed until the day after and before your op they will give you these long green stockings to put on to avoid blood clots which you wear whilst you are in hospital and sometimes at home although I didn't as they never mentioned me wearing them at home.

Ah I see, so the anaethetist will come and see me before the op.  I have options?  I don't know if I can make any more decisions.  I decided just to have the ovaries and fallopin tubes removed for now until they have done the testing because to do a frozen section, they have to send it across the city to another hospital and I didn't like the idea of being under the anaesthetic while this was being done - it is quite a little way and the traffic is bad.  So I am hoping and praying I don't have to have another op.  Didn't know about the green stockings either, but I can't wait!  Thank you for all the infomation Janet, it's really helpful to me.  Let me know if you think of anything else.  I feel better having all this information beforehand.

      Best wishes

Getting up I found it best to roll onto my side and bring my knees up towards my chest, then swinging them out of bed while pushing myself to a sitting position with my hands.

Hi. Hope i can help u.

I had left ovary tube and big 9 cm dermis cyst removed June 2013.

Help for pre operation I can't really advice much apart from try and get everything u need so u can relax and recover after op and jot worry about things.

    Hospital I would take.

Face wipes - great for cooling u down or feeling refreshed if ur feeling shabby afterwards. I used them on my head and to wipe my body.

Slippers, pj's, clothes thst aren't tight for coming home cause ur tummy will be tender, brush, small selection of toiletries like body wash and hair stuff in case u were to stay in. And I would say that it. Cause u probably want to sleep after op.

There's a herbal tablet u can buy in most boots or Holland and Barratt. Called arnica it's really good for healing the skin and people recommended it. I used it on my second op 7 wks ago and I think it helped.

As for ibs issues... I suffered massively before my operation last year.  But once I had my cyst and ovary and tube out I never really have any ibs issues. Ok..so I still get bloated and things but I wouldn't class it as bad. I used to get constipation and take up to 8 laxatives a day for week and still wouldn't go. So now I am not like that at all.

So u might find this helps u.

I got really bad gas in my shoulder blade. Which is normal but it is so uncomfortable especially when it gets stuck under ur ribs. So try and sit up and walk around little and often after op to help get rid of it. Cause I found it was worse lying down.

There's loads more I can tell u. Just let me know.

As for me I still suffer with bad pains and had a operation 7 wks ago to look back in but they said i had few adeshions.  I am finding things hard cause I never got hip pain like i do since operation so am worried something wrong thst they aren't picking up .. Am actually seeing a different specialist gyne consultant at a different hospital next Thursday. I just get really painful hip pain. And it hurts at the monthly cycle more and back pain. I never had this before my op last year.

my operation last year was done as an emergency cause I was rushed in due to my cyst twisting and damaging my ovary and tubes.

Please let me know if anything else I can tell u or want to know. By the way am 32 and have no kids. Really want to have a family one day. My periods are always dark since op last year and very light.

    Hope helped u x

Hi Sarah.  Thanks so much for letting me know these things.  They are really helpful.  I'm one of those sorts of people who needs to be prepared so I like to know what to expect.  Funnily enough, yesterday I read about arnica so have sent for some tablets and cream.  Also the face wipes are a great idea!  I will try and take little walks as much as possible after the op for the wind. If you think of anything else, please let me know and will ask if I think of anything.

I'm so sorry you are still suffering with pain and glad to hear you are seeing  a consultant on Thursday. It's good that they have already had a look. Let us know how you get on.  Will be thinking of you.

      xx Kathy
