Any other ladies that have had Dermoid Cysts from both Ovaries ??

Hi ladies,I decided to start my own thread as i dont want to freak out anyone whose new to the dreaded Dermoids!!though im not happy to see how many of us suffer with these things.I won't bore you with all my medical issues...In 2011 a year after having Gallbladder surgery, with Major complications,I was still in pain so had a CT scan that showed up a Dermoid Cyst 8×8 cm with a piece of pointy bone in it which was causing all my pain.I got referred to an Oncologist/Gyn and had it removed within 5 weeks. The Dermoid had grown from my left ovary and under my Uterus poking my right ovary (which is where I got most of the pain) I had to have the ovary and both damaged fallopian tubes removed via keyhole.I was 42 and lucky enough to have had 4 children.I was told after that I would have no further problems,Dermoids are rare and that my periods and hot flushes would calm down now as the Dermoid had caused it all.I have felt like blah ever since, periods between 3-9 weeks, constant hot flushes and now tearful (all pointers to the Menopause) I had an MRI on my spine and it has showed up more Dermoids in my Pelvic area.Im gutted and in pain and annoyed that I didn't know any would grow from my seemingly healthy Ovary!!! I'm going to a Well woman's clinic on Monday and paying for some scans so I can get referred quickly.Last time I got the Cancer talk due to my age but at least I knew that one hadn't been growing for long as I had alot of scans for the Gallbladder. But I can't help but worry now I'm 46 and suspect these ones have been growing for 3-4 years.I had just reached the point of seeking a GYN as my periods and ovulation have become unbearable and I'd no idea I was at risk of more Dermoids!!!..I feel better for finding you ladies and talking to people who are going through this who totally understand. Thanks for any help/advice smile

Oh you poor thing, that's awful.I hope you continue to stay possitive and well.My first one was obvious that it was a Dermoid due to the bone in it.Ive managed to get a quick private appointment to get them looked at quicker.I remember when I was on the op table last time saying,"I have had nothing but painful periods for ever and have completed my family so can't you take it all out, womb and all,to save any future issues" she swiped away my concerns and simply said you need your ovary as it keeps your hormones balanced and you won't have any further problems or early Menopause...bearing in mind my Mum's started at 42!!! At least I know why I've been feeling so bad and hopefully it's not too serious like you.Did you have alot of hot flushes and just not feeling right before you got diagnosed?I wish you well and will look up your page.Thankyou, all the best to you x

Hi Amy,I just scrolled through your fb page.Youve really been through an awful time. You struck a chord with me with the IBS.I was Diagnosed with it after my Gallbladder disaster and had camers etc and as they couldn't find anything I got told it's IBS.However, I'm on medication for Arthritis and inflammatory Joint disease, which also happens to treat Chrons too and my IBS is much calmer now.I am worried that something was missed.

I nursed my Mum through Breast cancer Surgery,Radiotherapy &Chemotherapy last year so I can understand the hell you went through.I never knew much about it all,I suppose we don't until ourselves or someone close to us gets that shock diagnosis.Well done for sharing your story and educating others.Take care x

    Hello Deb

I'm interested to know if they scanned your right side when they found the dermoid cyst on the left....? Or if they spotted anything during surgery.

I'm having an MRI on Monday as I have cysts on each side, both suspected to be dermoid, though the smaller one is just the size of a grape so far.

These complex cysts are less common than the simple fluid cysts but the gyn told me that 15% of dermoid cases are then bilateral, and once both taken out they very rarely recur.

so perhaps you had the early stages of a cyst on the right and they just didn't spot it at the time.  After the left one was removed perhaps your hormones fed the right one instead so it grew.  Just theorising!

Although only my right cyst has caused real pain I'm asking them to remove both while they're in there! Save future complications.

I hope your issues are resolved quickly and you can start to feel healthy.

Hi Cachermum ,when the original one was found I'd had a CT scan and been injected with the dye stuff so anything else should have shown up,but if it was tiny then it could've been missed.I had a pre op TV (Trans Vaginal)scan and ultra sound and they were looking thoroughly. Also during the op she said she would inspect the right Ovary, and it was fine.

I've been confused and was assuming that when the last one was removed that I'd feel normal again...but that didn't happen.Ive had the same dull ache in my right side since then (possibly thought to be Adhesions from both surgeries) so I wasn't worried and learnt to live with it.Though I had reached my pain limit a few days ago.I know when I Ovulate due to the pain and my periods do a painful announcement a week before they arrive!! I've had 3 periods that were late by 9 weeks,I think they may be the culprits and became Dermoids.Ive a busy few days so will been nicely distracted and Monday morning I'll have some answers and information.

You'd be better off having both sides removed, though it brings the Menopause earlier, and avoid any more complications.Do you have lots of hot flushes and feel very tired and hormonal?seeing as both sides are involved.

Good luck with your MRI on Monday and I'll let you know how I get on too.

Thankyou for replying,it feels like therapy x

Hello I'm am 20 in Feb I discovered I have 2 dermoid cysts one on each ovary. One is 3.5 and the other 3.7cm the dr says she has no way of knowing if the are for sure benign or if I will lose both ovaries until I have the surgery to remove the cysts. So my main concern is having kids. She gave me info on IVF but I know the for sure thing right now is having one now but idk if that's safe is there anyone in a similar situation that has gone thur this or has any info that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Nessanay, I'm sorry to hear you're so young and obviously need to protect your fertility. There is an older forum and I'm sure a few younger ladies have commented with very similar situations to you, and gone on to have children.

From what I've read there's only a tiny chance of them being Cancerous but mainly if you're over 40,so try not to worry about that too.

Yours are still medically classed as small, and diagnosed before they got too big and destructive,so you've a good chance that your Ovaries could be saved and Docs are very good at preserving fertility when the patient is younger.

You could start your own thread specifically asking about fertility with Dermoid Cysts and it's surprising how many of us sufferers are out there looking for advice and help. And also for you to hear that there is hope sometimes. You must be so worried.Take care and don't scare yourself with what's on the Internet. Everyone's outcome is different.Good luck x

I'm 23 and I have a dermoid cyst on both ovaries they was found during an ultrasound while I was pregnant I was in my second trimester and they didn't get that much bigger so the doctor left them alone . I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. It's been a month since I gave birth and now they want to schedule a surgery. I am really nervous and anxious. The doctors are pretty sure it's just dermoid cyst but ofcurse im freaking out about the 2% chance of it being cancerous

Hi, i am also having to consider the possibility of IVF! When i was 14 i had a 13cm dermoid cyst removed from my left ovary. My consultant removed the cyst via keyhole, and also removed my ovary, as the cyst had completely destroyed my ovary. I am now 17, and have been experiencing similiar pains that i had when i was 14. My GP sent me to have an ulrasound, and another dermoid cyst was found on my remaining ovary. Thankfully, this one is only small  (3cm) and has been caught early, and the pains that i have been experiencing are scar tissue from my op 3 years ago.

My case is now being considered as urgent, and my consultant is attempting to get me NHS funding to have some eggs removed and frozen. (He is concerned that he may not be able to save any of my ovary; and i don't want kids now because i am still at school but want to have some in the future!) The only problem with freezing eggs is that they don't thaw too well, meaning that the whole process may not even work. A much more successful method is freezing embryos, so fertilizing the egg and then freezing it. I decided not to take this path, as i wasn't too keen on having a donor sperm, but if you are in a stable relationship, you could use your partners sperm and use this as a backup, just in case your ovaries cannot be saved.

I hope you get your case sorted asap, i understand how upsetting and stressful it can be, especially when it could affect having kids in the future!

      Good Luck x

Congratulations on the arrival of your little girl!! That's amazing with a Dermoid on each Ovary.I should think they didn't grow much during your pregnancy as Ovulation stops..

Please try not to worry about the possibility of Cancer.I went privately yesterday about my 2nd one that is 6×6cm and has a calcified lump and hair!!! I'm 46 and the Cancer rate goes up higher once youre older and I'm not worried one bit.I would worry more if it was an unidentified growth/Cyst but knowing it's a Dermoid means we should be fine smile

I know it's a worry and I won't lie the surgery takes a bit of getting over,so make sure you have someone to help for a week or two as you have a baby.I hope your reply gives Nessanay Some hope.Let me know how you get on with everything 💖

Have you had any symptoms. ? I don't have any pain in my sides but I been having other issues just wondering if it could be related

Hi,yes I've been feeling not right for a long time.I have constant dull pain in my lower right side that is very bad when I Ovulate and only calms down once ive had my period.I have hot flushes alot and don't sleep well anymore. Also if my bladder is full then I get more pain.I feel constantly pre menstrual.Sometimes I go a bit dizzy.I can go from feeling normal to feeling generally awful in minutes. My symptoms are so vague and been blamed on scarred tissue from 2 previous surgeries.I now feel stupid for not getting it checked out sooner.I actually find it better to deal with now I know what it is.
