Hi I've been on Sertraline for ten weeks.. Have been up and down! You can read my past posts for more information! I am just wondering if anyone else gets the same weird feeling as i do.. It's almost like things don't feel real, everything is happening around me, my thoughts are intrusive and really fast, and it's horrible sad

Is this because of my anxiety? Is it because of sertaline? Or is possibly from the diazepam I take sometimes to calm down??

Any advice welcome smile thank you

    Hi Danielle.

Sorry to hear things are tough. I know 10 weeks seems like an eternity when you're anxious, depressed or both. SSRI medication can create a bit of a feeling of unrealness. Like any side-effect, this can (& does) pass. But I guess that can vary between people. The issue is, I suppose, can you ride it out & put up with it? In my experience, if the medication is having positive effects, then I'm generally more able to deal with the negatives. From what your saying, the fast intrusive thoughts stuff sounds like the sertraline is upping (or creating) your anxiety.

Have you talked to your doctor? Could you adjust the dose? Could you maybe move the time you take the dose? If you take it in the morning, you're maybe having to deal with it making you feel anxious when you have to go out & face the world? Moving it to the evening could help that? Or possibly if you're taking it in the evening you could move it to the morning if that might help?

My experience of diazepam is that it will calm and soothe nerves, I'm not sure I've felt anything but relaxation from it - definitely not the unrealness feeling. I'm not sure it's a side effect of it. It sounds as though the Sertraline is making you anxious?

Thank you so much for your reply! I saw my doctor yesterday who has signed me off work until next week when I can visit my usual doctor (she is on holiday at the moment)! He said to discuss with her next week either changing dosage, as I am currently on low dose of 50mg! Or if I want to change to a different tablet!

I'm not sure what to do really, the Sertraline has had some positive effects, particularly with my fear of social situations and physical feelings of anxiety are less bad! However this feeling of unrealness is impossible to ignore, and makes my anxiety do much worse!

I'm worried upping the dose would make that worse, but then changing to another tablet obviously means a few weeks to come off tablets and starting all over again on something different! I will discuss all of this with doctor!

Thank you for assuring me this is a normal ish feeling!

Not sure what you are taking it for. But I changed meds to Sertraline last October and went through hell for about 12 weeks. But since January I have been back at work and much better. I have OCD and I am managing if much better now. I am on max dosage of 200mg of Sertraline and got there by increasing up 50mg instalments from starting on 50mg. I found that through the transition my OCD got worse, I had insomnia and it was up and down like a roller coaster! I am much better now, sleeping great and glad I stayed on Sertraline.

Thanks for your reply smile I take the tablets for general anxiety, perhaps I just need to adjust the dose then until it feels right for me! I'm not sure really as these tablets just make me feel really strange a lot of the time!

Really good to hear a positive outcome from these tablets! Glad you're feeling better!!
