Anybody ever had diarrhea after paleo or antibiotics and felt better for a little while?

I've had CFS for 1.5 years after glandular fever.

I embarked upon a paleo diet at the start of the year to see if it would calm my immune system. After 3 weeks of the diet, i felt no benefit and exhuasted but I randomly had 4 days of terrible diarrhea that the doc said was norrovirus. After this, I could only eat toast, so was back onto the carbs carefully and I felt quite good for 2 weeks before a relapse back into CFS.

Any explanations? Any similar experiences?

I should also add that i was not tested for norro.... it was just the stand-in doc's guess.

I'm unclear about one thing. Did you have CFS when you started the Paleo diet, or had you been in remission when you started the diet? If so, how long had you been in remission? Since you talk about a relapse back into CFS I'm assuming you'd been free of the disease for a while?

Sorry! Bad choice of words.... No, I've always had CFS for the last 1.5yrs... I meant relapse back into the norm after two weeks of feeling noticeably better... Nowhere near 100%, but maybe 70% after mostly feeling 30%.

Paleo was just something someone suggested.

apparently it takes at least 3 weeks for the body to adapt to the Paleo diet and to use ketones for energy. perhaps you needed to stay on it for longer to reap the benefits. however, it has the reputation for raising cholestrol and making one fat on the inside (i.e. the organs including the heart) thus prediposing to heart disease, type 2 diabetes etc.

    Hi,

I started the paleo diet three months ago and did not have the same problems.  I felt quite alert and less bloated than eating carbs.  Bowels were more frequent due to all the veg but no diarrhoea.  I struggle to keep to the diet as i miss bread and have craved corned beef sandwiches (of all things!) or cheese sandwiches.  I will persevere with it as I did feel better.  Also, it's difficult to eat out.  Will you try it again?

Yep, am going to start it on monday again. one of the things i struggled with the most was energy to constantly make specialist food but i'm cheating next week... i found a paleo company that deliver a weeks worht of balanced evening meals, so i'm going to do that and focus my (little) energy on brekky and lunch. i'm excited to try it again as I feel it does help me... but it's been hard lately with life getting in the way, visitors from other countries, and going out for dinner etc. i'm gonna knuckle down and really have a good go at it here.

thanks for that reply, you've inspired me to approach it with new vigour on Monday.  I agree it's the energy required to prepare food that is a big problem.  I find fish fried in coconut oil (the one without coconut smell) and then pak choi and spring onions stir fried in the same pan is quick or fish cooked in the oven along side roast veg.  If i'm very tired I put the peppers in whole.  My treat now and again is fillet steak and spinich, again cooked in one pan. I buy bags of mixed nuts to eat when I can't think of anything to eat.  Any ideas for speedy food are greatfully received.  Do you restrict your fruit intake?  I love fruit, no prep at all!

yeah, i think that was my problem.... i filled up on bananas and apples early on and then someone said it contained too much sugar so i eased of them, and legumes, which severely restricted my diet. i'm gonna try restricted my fruit intake this time round.

one thing i came up with for breakfasts that should be quick and easy is egg muffins, if you google that. you can freeze them so i'm gonna make lots and pull them out of the freezer when y'need them. home-made Kumara crisps are good too as a snack.

Thanks for that advice.  I found some interesting receipes online for egg muffins including a pizza flavour with basil, origano, tomato and pepperoni.  I will try them.  I had to google Kumara but when I found out it is sweet potato I was pleased as they are easy to get hold of. I've recently started eating them as someone gave me a vietnamese pork curry receipe with sweet potatoes in and they taste nice eaten raw.  I've also seen them in cake receipes but i've not tried those.

I have tried the Paleo diet but ended up with very high cholesterol around the 12 to 14 mark, as such I had to attend the local hospital where a dietitian told me, "a balanced diet and a balanced lifestyle", so now I reduce my intake to match my ability to move about with ME.

I guess you could call it a “calorie restrictive diet” in some way as my ability to be active is restricted by my health so I balance the two. Have you considered this route?

I felt better on a paleo type diet in some ways (although keeping it higher in fish and white meat, rather than full blown meat eating). I have to cut carbs/sugar as low as possible or my ibs comes back with a vengance.

Although cutting out carbs (I have to keep fruit intake low too) makes me feel clearer headed, I struggle to get physical energy, I try to balance with good fats although I obviously haven't sussed out the balance properly yet.

But having said that if am very strict and almost starve myself for a while and then go back to carbs, like you, I can have a really good couple of weeks but it never lasts even if I make a real effort to keeps the carbs low, although when you purposefully try to do it it doesnt always work and just end up yo-yoing between no energy and some energy.

Although unlike you I was the opposite way in that going on a high protein diet gets rid of diarrhea and sometimes so does taking antibiotics (although antibiotics dont always help even if i take probiotics too)

My boyfriend had CFS after glandular fever too.He followed a healthy diet (this was 30 years ago-nobody'd heard of paleo, but it's similar, though not as drastic) and just ate lots of fish, meat, salad and veg and cut down on sugars(which give bad bacteria energy)..

He had a very nasty bout of gastroenteritis a couple of months after the swellings in his glands began-and the dehydration? caused the glands to reduce in size, with accompanying arthritis - like pains in his shoulders and legs.

Eat well, try to stick to simple foods when eating out ,rest often and drink LOTS of water. The ME Association has info which can help .

Boyfriend has never regained the fitness level he had before, but the acute stage lasted about a year, and he's regained normal mobility .He still needs to rest more than most people do,however, so pace yourself.
