anyone ever get nerve damage

Posted , 44 users are following.

I have posted this problem before I with concern of this new burning feeling in my foot. This is my 4week,( no weightberring total of 8 wks) and I am still having this burning fire feeling in my foot. It's not just a little burning. Which I do have sometimes, but at most times it's really bad. It's become every night. It literally feels like It's on fire and not getting any better. I called the Dr. and they said it's normal, but I find this hard to believe since most post that I read people seem to be getting better. I wanna know if anyone ever been told they have nerve damage so I can look at these real warning signs. Or if anyone else in their late recovery still having this fire feeling in their foot. I'm just concerned and looking for some relief.

Also, anyone in a waking boot and taking it off. I'm wondering if I may be doing damage taking it off. I have to sometimes because the burning feeling is so bad I need to ice the bottom of my feet.

Thank you

Jen

Hi Jennifer, I forgot to mention I am in the UK, 70 yrs old and still fit and active. I had my surgery done on our NHS (National Health Service). At my initial consultation with the surgeon, he explained fully the operation he would be performing and followed with telling me all risks that could happen. Nerve damage and numbness being just two of them. Then I was asked if I had any questions. If I agreed to accept the risks, I would be asked to sign the Consent Form. I knew beforehand therefore, all the things that could go wrong but as I was willing to take that chance, I signed on the dotted line. If I hadn't had the operation I know my walking in the future just would have gone from bad to worse and I would end up in a wheelchair. Having said all that, I personally still believe the symptoms you are getting are 'normal' for 4/5 weeks so try not to worry. I bet you'll find that things will begin to ease very soon and in the future weeks. I think all this tingling, burning and numbness is a good sign that things are healing - it just takes time - and no two people are the same. Good luck and be patient, all will be fine you'll see. I'm having my second foot done at the end of our summer so it can't be that bad - can it? LadyPink

    Hi Jennifer

How are you doing now? I am 4 weeks post op now (both feet) and am having the burning sensations you have described. Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

    Thanks in advance

Yes! There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I was about 4wks too when I started experiencing that burning feeling. It did get better. It was not nerve damage, although I got frightened because everything I read on the subject was what I was feeling and could happen with bunion surgery. But no. What it was, was a bloody calise from the bandage being too tight. The whole side of my foot where the pinky toe was became bruised. I was in a lot of pain especially at night. Finally when I had another apt he loosed the bandage and eventually it got better. Maybe you can loosen the bandage to help. Let me know if you have any more questions. As I know all about this fire burning feeling

      I feel your pain

      Hi Jennifer

I remember seeing that in another post somewhere but didnt tie the names in. I started getting these burning feelings at day 9 post op. I eventually took my sock like bandage off after a week and had so much relief from it. I thought i had cracked it, but no it comes back every night. I have had a few appointments with my GP who thinks everything is ok but dont get to see the specialist for another 2 weeks yet. Thanks for your reply and i will keep updating this going forward.

Hi Jennifer. Just curious how you ended up after a year? I just had a severe pilon fracture (tibia and ankle smashed). Has surgery on Nov 18th, came home on Nov 23, had foot pain like you ever since. Been getting worse. It's week 4 right now. Had my local dr diagnose the redness and pain as the gout. Never had that ever in my life. Gave me meds and nothing worked so obviously he was wrong. Just looking for an update if you can... it's 1:30 am and my foot it burning and paining me big time! Thank you.

      James:

This sounds like CRPS, definitely not gout. If your foot is burning, stinging and aching and is changing color, it is likely CRPS and you have to get yourself to a Pain Managemt doctor who knows CRPS right away. STAT. I have it as a result of surgery and it is terrible. Please go.

I am so sorry you are having this problem. I wish I could tell you it will get better. However never give up hope.

My bunion/hammer head toe surgery was four years ago. I am in constant pain. The burning is unbearable, the muscle spasms and cramps at night keep me up till 5 or 5 in the morning and wake me a few hours later. I have actually had two surgeries since the first one. It nearly crushed me when I went to a new podiatrist and was told that I have severe nerve damage and a badly arthritic big toe due to the screws. I was able to wear shoes with just short stints where my foot was to angry to tolerate it but three months ago it flavored up. I have been unable to wear a shoe since. It takes about ten minutes for my foot to even tolerate a sock.

There is some good news though. My doctor referred me to a pain management clinic. They are starting me out by increasing my Gabspentin to 1800mg per day and gave me a script for Voltage Gel. Now I'm not real sure about the Gabspentin dosage increase because I have seen numerous posts about the severity of the side effects so I may not do that but the gel is awesome. It doesn't last very long but considering how long I have been in constant pain, I'll take any burning free time I can get.

Sorry this wasn't the rosey answer you wanted, but maybe you can get your doc to write you the gel.

This sounds like CRPS. - please ask the pain team to investigate the possibility. This is what I've been diagnosed with. A nerve block might help you.

I have severe nerve pain after Bunion/toe joint surgery too. My orthopedic surgeon sent me to Pain Management too. Turns out that I have CRPS as a result of surgery. Not the doctor's fault (I hope). I'm just lucky (I think). I'm on 2700 msg of Gabbapentin and I take 4 Tanzanine pills with it at night for the spasms. It helps a lot. I have had NO side effects at all. I am also getting sympathetic nerve blocks. I have had 12 since Feb 8th. We are trying to get the CRPS to go into remission. There is no cure.

I am now 2 years post op. Unfortunately I've suffered immense pain 24/7 simce my surgery. So much so that i was referred back to my consultant a month ago. I described to him the constant fuzzy feeling i get along with the sensation thaty toe is gravitating upwards all the time. The only way to explain it is like your foot swelling after a very long flight and ypu ferl like its going to explode or cuttung your toenails too short and that weird burning sensation you get. Or even like when you've bern in the freezing cold and you plunge your foot in hot water snd it gives a hot cracking feeling. No matter how you describe it the one tjing is, it controls your life. It affects everything i do from driving to sleeping. My surgeon took one look and realised instantly that the nerve was trapped in the scar tissue. Probably caused by him trussing my foot too tight when he closed it after surgery. I now have to go back for further surgery to release the nerve. Im so worried that he wont be able to undo what he's done to my foot. All i know is i suffer a silent pain no need one else can see.

Hi everyone- I just had a bunionette surgery(tailor's bunion surgery 2.5 weeks ago and have burning nerve pain on the side of my foot/where the injections were. I knew there was a chance to get numbness at my pinky toe and or incision site, but didn't expect it anywhere else. I ended up having burning pain where he did the injections/ side of foot down from incision. When I went to see the surgeon 2 days ago I showed him where it was burning and he said that's your sural nerve and then he said it's retracted during surgery., and gets irritated and that goes away in time. ( is irritated code word for injured or damaged. Did the nerve get injured during the blind shots or when the nerve was retracted back . Was it nicked? Very scared. Does this get better without medicine?

Beanie- did you have the surgery? Are you any better?

That is the same pain I feel! My big toe is also rising up. I can put my finger under it and my toe does not touch it! I wonder if I have a nerve being pinched too. I have been diagnosed with CRPS. Look it up please. Any further surgeries will make it worse and may cause it to spread if you do have it. Go to a pain management doc familiar with it. I hope you get relief and please tell me if you find out why the toe is doing that.

Hi, I was wondering if you've gotten any relief yet? I just had foot surgery 3 weeks ago and started getting this burning pain mostly in my heel. The surgery was done on my toes but also was told tendons that should have then on top of my foot were on the side. The pain is usually in the night but today it's not going away. I sure don't want to have this for months to come. Still have a soft cast on for another three more weeks nonweightbearing. Any tips would be appreciated. I hope you're doing better than me.
