I'm having right THR on Tuesday July 19. But last September I was having pain on the right side going from my butt down my leg. My Dr. sent me to the pain management clinic, where I had a series of 5 spinal epidurals which didn't help.
I then went to my neurosurgeon and he said my sciatic nerve was pinched on the right side and I would need back surgery to fix it. But he said I would need to get my hip fixed first.
That's when I finally went to the Orthopedic Dr. and he discovered I had no space between the ball and joint on the right side, my left side is good.
So I'm wondering if I get this right hip replacement that maybe since I won't walk "like a duck" afterwards, maybe that will alleviate the sciatic nerve being pinched..
Thoughts please....

Alice,
I had pain on right side down my leg to my knee. It seemed to be deep in groin and back in butt. My Ortho surgeon said there are a lot of nerves by the hip joint. I too was bone on bone had posterior rthr pain is now gone. I'm 5 weeks post surgery no pain but a little surgery pain been driving sense week three no walking aids. Hopefully this may be your problem. Good luck and listen to your body during recovery.

Redmuir,
Thanks for the info. So you basically had the same pain as I had and it's from the nerves by the hip joint. I am hoping this fixes my pain problem and I don't need back surgery. That's all this pain was because I needed a hip replaced.

I'm 6 months post op. For years I had problems with different pains including sciatica. Since the op my hip has been fine and I have no pain from that area. I'm having problems with my foot but that is another story.
you should be fine with the hip surgery. I have a friend who hasn't had my bother at all concerning the hip surgery.
I wish you luck and my thoughts are with you

Thanks Brenda. I've had both my knees replaced and I kinda know a thing or two about recovery. Actually, I also had a knee revision and before all of that I ahd 3 scopes on my knees. My grandkids call me "Bionic"

Hi Alice:
I did have a similar problem. I had epidural injections as for back problems and it helped slightly but didn't last long. One Orthopedic specialist told me my problems were my back and I needed the injections. I went for over a year in terrible pain, barely able to waddle around and right before my rthr I could barely even walk with a walker or crutches. I went to a new specialist who informed me that BOTH of my hips were severe. This was after the first one told me the left was fine. I know the second doctor was right because once the epidural helped with some of the pain the only thing left was the hip pain. I had my rthr 8 weeks ago and am supposed to get my lthr next month. My right side was so bad that the ball (top of femur) went in way up higher on the right side than the left and thus making my right leg way shorter than the left. During surgery it was also discovered that I had a fractured pelvic bone. I am not walking and functioning better than I have in a long time, but am anxious to get the left side done as I won't be able to walk or function completely normal or without aid until I do. A lot of the problems I had that I had attrributed to my back/spine problems are now gone after my hip replacement. I am wishing you luck...Barb

Hi Barb,
Everyone always says get two opinions....or should we say maybe THREE... I think about the 5 epidural injections I got, that did nothing for my pain and also all of the pain pills I took that also did not take any pain away. Also all the money I spent on doctor visits & prescriptions...
I am also hoping that my pain goes away after I recovery from my surgery on Tuesday and I know I don't need back surgery, just this HIP surgery.
I won't get out of the hospital until Friday, so I will be MIA for a few days, but I will update when I can.
Thanks Barb,
Hugs,
Alice

It definitely pays to have more than one opinion. The best thing the first Orthopedic office did for me was to send me somewhere else! Of course that was after a year of suffering, fighting with the insurance because they said I didn't need the injections etc...what a battle and it turns out it was my hips doing the most harm or damage after all. I hope that you have as much success as I have had. Will keep you in my prayers, have a quick recovery.....Barb

I'm also fighting with the insurance company & the Doctors office that did the injections. Insurnac company said the Dr. office didn't send in all the paperwoek, then the Dr.'s office keeps sending me LARGE bills for me to pay..What a merry go round...
Thanks for the prayers, my surgery is TOMORROW, so I will be MIA for a few days, but will update when I can.
