Anyone get high ocular pressure immediately after cataract surgery?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Dec 23 my left eye was done and despite drops every 10 minutes, my intraocular pressure spiked to 35. Seemed everyone so busy trying to get home that only a tech was able to talk and explain the best he could . The optomitrist punctured the eye to let fluid out. That night i saw the dr on call who increased all my 6 drops and said pressure was 21. I dont have glaucoma or any issues other than astgmatism and the posterior subcapsulated cataract.

Today of course is Christmas and no one is callng from facilty to see how I am so im turning to you guys 😦

My vision is blurred. There are long streaks of saber like lights going out from my eye. No significant pain but I feel eyeball pulsating or bouncing. Anyone else have this and it all ended well?

Thank you

Not sure if it comes out garbled from ipad or what. what Im asking is does anyone else have an experience where their pressure shot up and their vision is blurred with light saber like streaks from it?

      Hi

Are you sure that pressure is high, have you had the pressure measured?

I had no problems with pressure, but if pressure is high, you need your clinic to evaluate it, and have their opinion whether it should be treated or not.

yes it was up to 35 . it being Christmas a tech convinced them to give my drops until i can be seen tomorow "fit in." Rather upsetting since i specifically asked if someone was available over Christmas. Apparently only to chat on phone .

I saw the oncall doc who increased the drops im on and said if i had great pain to call.

how do you know it is iop spike. if it is then call doctor or head to the ER. they will have to administer a miotic to get the pressure down.

My pressure was high after my first surgery and I was prescribed another (expensive!) drop to use, along with the regular drops I was already using. I was told some people have a reaction to the steroids in the regular drops. They didn't seem too concerned about it and didn't check it again until my appointment prior to my second surgery. It had returned to normal. They had me continue using the expensive drops after the second surgery to prevent the high pressure from developing again.

thankyou for your replies . in case this does happen to anyone , i was told today its fairly normal ( along with apology for not following up after surgery). Im now on bromitidine drops twice a day until Monday and kenolog eyedrops twice a day , when I have official recheck 1 week post surgery.. The vision should improve as the edema goes down. The sparks and streaks i saw were result of fold in lens from the swelling. My eye pressure was normal today although Ive been on drops 3 times a day.

For every person who says this surgery was a piece of cake, there are others who go through something.. Hopefully everyone ends up ok

My eyes were set to near and i can read but hope it gets better. Right now im still dilated and numb

Many people do not get good vision (or it comes and goes) till drop regiment is over with. Very normal that vision isn't clear - especially if there is still swelling.

Spot on Sue. i am 2 & 3 weeks out now and still on the Prednisone drops only. Vision is good most of the time, but whacks out a bit after using the drops. I am looking forward to the drops being done for sure...!!! 😃

With my first eye surgery, I had IOP of 28 measured in my follow up appointment the day after the surgery. They prescribed an eye drop that I had to use once per day in that eye. My other eye was done the following week, and they measured the pressure in both eyes in the follow up for it. Pressure was down to 17 in the first eye. Second eye was 19, so didn't need the drops. They said it was common for the IOP to increase due to the viscous fluid they put in; I guess sometimes they do not get it all out and it takes longer to get through the trabecular mesh and flushed away. The drops I guess help to speed that process if I understood the Dr correctly. I also had blurred vision until the second day when it started getting almost perfect, but I would also have times where it would blur up again. I am only 2 & 3 weeks out from my surgeries, and still have some blurriness that comes and goes, but I think it is part of the healing process it seems. I am still taking the steroid eye drops for another week in one eye and 2 weeks in the other. My other drops (Prolensa & Bisevance) are over. My vision is doing really well, and I hope it gets even better once the drops are done as they sting and cause a fair amount of the blurriness for awhile afterwards. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Wouldnt you think not getting all the fluid out is surgeon error? Like if they spent another few moments, all the fluid would have been flushed? Just curious. Its a lot of sturm und drang to go through.

i am not sure that it is really surgeon error, rather it is just something that can happen. i dont know all of the medical stuff, but i am sure that different eyes have different characteristics and behave in different ways in each patient. And i am not sure that they can ever get it all out, then it just depends on the variances in the trabecular mesh density in each person. The surgeon has to balance the time they spend in there trying to suck out the fluid with potential for eye damage maybe... I'm not sure, but i was also told it is very common occurance and the drops help to fix it when it does happen, and varies patient to patient and even eye to eye like with me. As i said, mine was back to normal in a week.
