Anyone had a muscle come away from the bone after a hip replacement?

I had a right hip replacement in December which never seemed to settle properly. 3 weeks I discovered the muscle in my right leg had come away from the bone. I was operated on to reattach it but still am in terrible pain and unable to put weight in my right side. I understand this is uncommon but at the age iof 50 am beginning to think I will never walk properly again! I'm going to see my consulltant again this week as I know things are not right. Has anyone had this happen to them as I really am beginning to dispair

Oh, poor you, that sounds just awful!

I've not had my op yet, but need LOADS of detail to help me make rational decisions & surgeon I saw was very good in meeting that need. From the figures he quoted, 95% of operations go smoothly & of the 5% that don't go so well, only 2% of patients need further surgery. So, I can only think (& hope) that you have just been very very unlucky.

Normal hip surgery slices through the biggest muscle in the body, so it was always going to be a while before you felt 100%. When you see the consultant, I'd check whether the problem is due to the muscle sliced during surgery not rejoining properly, or whether you have had an associated tendon or ligament problem.

I was told that muscles take a 12 week period to fully rejoin, then you need to build up strength again. I know from eventing horses that torn ligaments also take 12 weeks to rejoin & 6 months of measured exercise to get back to event fitness. I'd think tendons are even slower than that, as they are made of denser tissue, but check with the consultant, as I'm not an expert in human injury, just horses!

I do hope that you get well soon - being in pain & immobile is the pits!

Thanks for your reply.............I will ask about the tendons and ligaments when I next see him.

I do know that most replacements do go well however my consultant was absolutely insistent that due to my age and attitude that I would be up and around by 6 weeks and probably back at work by 8!!

Pretty difficult to deal with as I'm struggling to see I'll be back at work after 6 months!

I've just found this site. My first hip replacement will be in June so I'm just trying to find out more about it. Mostly everything seems very positive. I notice it has now been a couple of months since your op and difficulties, so I'm wondering how things are for you now?

Finally in the last week I am noticing some improvement. I saw another consultant at my follow up appointment who explained the healing process after this 2nd operation in far better detail. I am still having to use two crutches and my operated side is very weak. However I am doing all my exercises and determined to try and get back to normal as soon as possible. I am feeling far more positive now!! I'm glad you're doing a bit of research before your operation and I wish you well. I wish I had done the same as although this is an unusual senario...complications from this "routine" operation do arise and I was not prepared for what happened to me!
