I was changed from fluoxetine to trazodone a few months ago - changeover was ok, no real problems. Trazodone certainly helped with my sleep problems but not really the depression, so I've now had venlafaxine added in as well. That's very recent so don't know how I'll get on with that.

Mirtazapine is another second-line AD that you may be offered - I wasn't keen on that because of the associated weight gain which can be a side effect, which is why I tried trazodone.

Good luck - what has your GP suggested?

    Hi,

I too was prescribed fluoxetine and was on it for 4 weeks but felt worse than I have ever done, very nervy and anxious. I saw my g.p on Friday who has taken me off flu and has prescribed mirtazapine which apparently works well if you are an anxious person like me. Unfortunately I have got a week before the flu is out of my system and I'm finding it really hard but I have a great family and friends who keep me going. The weight thing is a worry but if you read a few posts not everyone suffers weight gain...anything is worth a go. Apparently you don't suffer as many side effects when you start these either, does anyone have any experience to back that up?

Hi, I have been changes to citalipram. I am a bit confused because it is still an ssri and I thought if one didn't work they tried a different group.

I have been on it a week now and think I am regressing.

You may like to read our general leaflet on SSRI antidepressants https://patient.info/showdoc/23068871 which says: [quote:b05574dd4c][b:b05574dd4c]Are there different types of SSRI antidepressants?[/b:b05574dd4c]

There are several different types. They include: citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and sertraline. Each of these comes in different brand names. There is no 'best buy' that suits everyone. If the one chosen does not suit, it is sometimes necessary to change the dose, or change the preparation. Your doctor will advise. Also, if SSRI antidepressants do not help then another type of antidepressant may be advised.[/quote:b05574dd4c] (Patient Admin Team)
