Anyone Had Surgery

If anyone has had surgery in the UK could you let me know

your experience please. ?

I've been offered surgery as I have multiple diverticular.

I am having flare ups too frequently but at nearly 70 surgery is daunting .

Hoping for positive posts but would love to hear any experiences.

Thanks.

Hi.... I live in the UK in Suffolk... I'm very young in Diverticulitis terms... 56 !! and was hospitalised after another flare up 3 weeks ago... CT Scan showed a diverticular stricture and my consultant has advised surgery which I am having in July... not looking forward to it.... but have had so many flare ups the last 3 years...I don't smoke...rarely drink alcohol and eat a balanced diet and excerise... so have told I'm just really unlucky...

      Hi Jools,

The sister on the unit I was on following my surgery said diverticula disease is on the increase, hospital statics showed it was. The whole unit I was on was ALL digestive disorders. She said the blame is our western diet apparently, not enough fibre and went on to state that eastern countries like Thailand, Vietnam and India don't suffer from DD, so I suppose that's what making health officials point the finger at our diet.

      Good luck for July.

      Lynne.

Thanks Lynne.... yes Diverticular disease is being blamed on the Western Diet.... however they do still get it in Asia/East but apparently on the right hand side of the colon whereas on the left in Europe !!

Hi, I'm katrina and I'm 44 , I've suffered for years with bowel problems, I had surgery on friday the 13th of Jan this year due to perforation of a diverticular which stuck to my womb and bladder, ended up with a colostomy, good job it happened as they then found bowel cancer, things have been a lot lot better for me since, but have started to have symptoms again the last few weeks, hope all goes well with you.

Hope everything settles down for you. Good they found the cancer when they did. The reason I had a colonoscopy was to look for bowel cancer so greatfull they only found DD

Hi Sally, I saw my surgeon yesterday, the symptoms I've been having are a reoccurrence of my diverticulitis, so need to monitor, was hoping they had removed it all when I had surgery but no so luck x

Hi Linda. I had surgery and I firmly recommend it!  My diverticulitis wasn't really causing any pain at all, just occasional fevers at night, but then I suddenly developed a fistula between the bladder plus repeated urinary tract infections. I was told that surgical removal of the sigmoid colon was the only solution. Yes, I was apprehensive but I live near an excellent specialist unit, St Marks hospital in Harrow, NW London. It's a bit scary to think of being put under anaesthetic and putting your life in the hands of the doctors, and I was in hospital for 5 nights and was eventually discharged with a temporary urinary catheter which isn't a very comfortable thing to have. But I can assure you that the pain of the operation is not at all bad, they give you plenty of pain relief, and I don't miss my sigmoid colon one bit. My bowel function is normal - no diarrhoea, no incontinence.  When I read about the agony some people go through when their diverticular disease is bothering them, I think surgery is far preferable.
