Anyone had what feels like groin strain after thr
Posted , 11 users are following.
Am 3 and half weeks and feel like I've sustained groin strain on operated side. Also a bit on other side. It's not a sharp pain, more a tugging in the growing and pubis area and a bit into my abdomen. Think it's all psoas related.
all I've been doing is walking (probably too much).
yesterday and today it's painful to walk even a few steps.
am icing a lot, and really hoping it will settle in the next day or so.

I have the same aches in my groin every now and again and if I remember rightly the first one was the same. I suppose different bits are healing at different rates. I am just thankful that it isn't the same groin pain that I had before.
I suppose we don't think that we are healing that fast but when I think about it I can now lift my leg over the bath so I am putting more strain on my groin. I go two steps back and rest, and ice, and walk slowly and it heals a bit more.
I think from this stage to about three months it happens all the time, we assume we are better than we are but I can assure you that it really does get better and stays better!

i often think that fear is our greatest challenge on this journey. I can honestly say that the fear (of never improving/ or this might be something serious and chronic) is worse than the pain on my bad days.

a productive session. It's all down to the psoas being so tight and restricted for about 9 months pre-op.
i have some very gentle exercises to do, and have been told to be very careful with the walking as too much will massively aggravate.
she is confident that we can sort it out, but it will take TIME. I am going to have to be very very patient (yikes).
also recommended that I take anti inflammatories . These have been known to cause me tinnitus in the past when I took very high doses. I am
prepared to take ibuprofen for a few weeks, as not being able to walk is infinitely worse than ringing in my ears lol!
i am finally convinced that this will improve, so I can stop worrying.
also the pelvic tilt has improved by about 50% already. And I can walk pretty well without any aids (so the hip is great).
its just down to the psoas then.
it will be a slow recovery, quite a bit slower than most apparently. But recovery nonetheless, and right now I am VERY happy with that !!

I had it last week and could not do the leg lift to the side but did it easy today after a few days rest, caught it early.

Thank you for posting ... I wish my physical therapist would give me exercises for psoas tightness too - I don;t know why their reaction is to turn down this possibility and tell me to do more of the standard exercises - Both groins (??), hurt and make me hunch over, with the right one , almost 12 months old, being the worst right now ...
Do you mind to tell me what kind of new exercises you got?
I sometimes feel like an idiot - as if I don't get it -
thanks again

i will send a separate message to you with a link to a good description of the exercises.
is it possible for you to find a different physio?
issues with psoas tendon are apparently pretty common after this op.
i have seen a number of discussions about it on this forum, so might be worth you doing a search.
are you taking anti inflammatories?
and also, apparently icing is better than heat for the inflammation.
will be in touch re exercises.

Yes, everyone seemed to think I should write a book as I was researching the topic extensively due to the problem I had with my first operation.
So I set up the website as there seemed to be a lot of books on THR that no-one was buying out there. It includes a comprehensive index, and sections on :-
Online Resources, What is Total Hip Replacement, Assessment and Referral, Pre-admission, To delay or not to delay, Home preparation, Admission, Anaesthetics, The operation, Hospital recovery, Early recovery, Long term recovery, Hints and tips, Aches and Pains, When can I do that, Medicines, Medical glossary, Complications, Technicalities
and my Blogs : Operation October 2015, Recovery 2015, Operation January 2016, Recovery 2016, and my Sponsor
My website address is in my personal information at
https://patient.info/forums/profiles/rocketman-sg6uk-907025
and in the moderator's pinned discussion "Useful Resources"

ive been doing lots of research on the tight psoas.
take a look at the following :
1. Liz Koch core awareness. This is a very comprehensive book, but covers a LOT
2. For something quick and immediate, take a look at psoas releases by Lisa Gillespie on you tube
3. Also Google "alignforhealth" and search for "ten exercises for a healthy psoas".
let me know if you are tempted to try any of these exercises, and if so , how you get on.

i think that the surgery itself is traumatic on the psoas.
also 9 days is very very early.
my physio said to stop the normal hip exercises that aggravate the psoas/groin.
i did stop them and I don't think it has harmed the recovery of my hip.
if your hip was compromised prior to surgery, you will have struggled to completely release the .psoas anyway
during hip surgery so much happens around the pelvis that many many people are affected in the groin area.
are you taking anti inflammatories?
most important in my opinion is to NOT aggravate the psoas/groin area.
I overdid walking at 2 and a half weeks, and am really paying the price. So my advice for now would be to
rest rest rest rest rest it.
i am at 6 and half weeks now, am a bit compromised by a tilted pelvis (which is rectifying), and only now am I able to start to feel what my body needs.
I was was in a great hurry to recover fro the THR, but My body won't let me yet. The psoas is a complicated one to address. But for you at 9 days, it's really very very early.
if it's any consolation though, when I discussed it with my surgeon 10 days ago, he said one option if physio and rest doesn't sort it out, is to have a steroid or Botox injection into the muscle to deal with the pain thus enabling one to do the proper exercise /physio regime to solve the problem.
i don't want to go there yet as I want to use this opportunity to release the mountains of stress and tension that my body is carrying.
will see how I am in another 6 weeks.
bit rambling.
stream of consciousness.
hope it helps.
