Anyone have these symptoms after dilation

Posted , 4 users are following.

I had myotomy years ago, then last year a successful dilation. I can eat anything now, however I get a tight throat and a heavy feeling in my stomach after eating sometimes.I am a very anxious person and wonder if my anxiety is causing this. Anyone else had similar symptoms?

When I get stressed out or anxious, I can feel the esophageal sphincter muscle tightening up.  You are very fortunate to be able to eat anything you like.  My diet is very rigid, pretty close to be a pureed diet.

Hi Donna thanks for your reply. Can you tell me what symptoms you get when you can feel your sphincter tightening up? It is 12mths since I had my dilation and am panicking in case its gone wrong.

My Heller Myotomy/Fundoplication surgery was Nov. 2016, and a balloon dilation was done March 2017.  When I am stressed, which has been recently with a death in the family, I simply feel that muscle tighten, its hard to describe, but when it does tighten, I go easy on the eating, and have pureed veggie soup, or pudding, or something else that is soft in nature; and yes, all this has to be 'washed' down with water.  I have type 1 Achalasia, which means my esophagus is paralyzed, dead, done.  I know that whatever goes into my mouth, and is washed down the esophagus, actually sits for awhile, waiting for that muscle to open up.  I have 'poor clearance,' out of the esophagus.  I do not panic, as I know this is the 'new normal' for me.  So, it is a matter of management, and knowing your body.  It is also, 'trial and error.'  But, I know that there might more balloon dilations needed in the future.  If you are really concerned, see your Specialist/surgeon and have a conversation.  You may need a balloon dilation again.

Sphincter tightening would probably feel like a pulling feeling or almost spasm feeling...your food sounds like it made it to  your stomach...
