Anyone know a good 'diet' book etc during a flare?

Hello all,

Ive had Colitis for nearly 17 years, I'm 32. I also suffer from IBS.

When I'm on Steroids, its all under control, but a week after I finish the course, its active again.

Has anyone tried a diet or used a book to help elimate foods etc during a flare. (This has been like this now for over a year and several courses of steroids). I know everyone is different, but just putting it out there...

Trouble is that I lost my job over a year ago and don't have a lot of money, and I find that the books ask for strange ingredients which cost a lot of money, usually found in health food shops etc..

Any ideas??

Thanks

Claire

Hi...look at specific carbohydrate diet. Plenty of stuff online re it. Also read up on psyllium seeds(available only online at Amazon or just ingredients a) and psyllium husk (available most places) there's lots of info about benefits of it online and in forums. It stopped my bleeding after 26 years uc . If u want any more info ask me MJ

Hi...I use both ...double to triple amount of seeds to husk...husk for bulking and other as antiinflammatory. I do one tsp husk to 2 tsp seeds or 3 tsp...depends how bad my uc is.....husk is for bulk and seeds are anti inflammatory......fill glass with water and stir well. Let sit for half hour to hour...it becomes gelatinous....if need put more water in to thin a bit. I tend to drink one to mouthfuls and have small glass of water and do the same throughout the day. Some people do not tolerate drinking glass all at once. I can do it either way but I think I'm better taking throughout day as its like a constant drip. However if u r working half in am and half in pm will b fine. I also take imodium twice a day to slow gut transit. U can get script or buy loperamide...same thing...in big chemists or stores...it's cheaper . Can I ask why u r on warfarin ...is it for different illness ? MJ

    Hello MaryJo,

Thank you for taking the time to write me a reply..I am looking into it all.

I lost my job through illness really-long story..

I'm on the warfarin for a recent blood clot in my lungs last October. The 2nd one i've had.  Now im on warfarin for life.As both times they nearly killed me..

Colitis and Chrones sufferers are twice as likely to develop them.. which I only recently found out..

So both are more than likely caused by the ugly Colitis..

I realised those husks are near enough the same as Fibogel-which is YUK!! but ill keep going and try what you suggest..anything to stop this colitis at the moment and ongoing..

    Many thanks

    Claire

Yeah I read that recently re colitis and clots. U r actually first person I ever heard of having uc and developing clot . It can't b a very common occurrence. I haven't actually looked up stats for it but it is very dangerous. Maybe some people have a predisposition for eventually developing clots in their lives and the colitis kind of makes it happen that bit earlier in life...just a theory....I am sorry bout job but unfortunately work places are not overly tolerant any more ! Yeah they are similiar. All I cansay is dilute it to point that it's tolerant to drink and it is easier if u just take mouthfuls throughout day...it ain't as hard taking one mouthful at a time as a full glass lol. Anyway I hope it is of some benefit to u    MJ
