Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Posted , 526 users are following.

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

Sorry if I'm replying or asking a question on this new format, I really don't understand it & don't know where to add a new topic & not to reply to someone.

My question is about work, I really want to take some time off but I'm stressed that on my return I will be managed like any employee in my workplace, with the possibility do disciplinary action for exceeding the company policy for attendance. I have a good attendance record but this new issue I'm faced with (depression) is really taking its toll.

If I was off I would be even more stressed about going back to the initial return to work, then any further consequences, but surely my employer knows that this process wouldn't help my current state of mind (they are aware I'm battling with depression), I suppose my question is, can I be disciplined for absence whilst off with a mental health issue as employers aren't allowed to discriminate, where any a sense is treated as a genuine absence no matter what your off for

    !....

    Any advice is most welcome

I believe as long as you are signed off by your doctor you are ok, usually you will find your work must support you and do whatever they can to help you, doesnt mean you have to be off for months go to the doctor and get treatment, you could be well in a few weeks etc

      Hi Mike,

By law an employer can't do anything aslong as you are signed off by your doctor

I am going to take time off, but my question was in relation to employers.

i don't think the added stress of returning when off work with depression/stress/anxiety & being managed on an absence policy would benefit the employer or the employee.

i was just wondering if this was the norm for an employer?

do you have OH at your work? they should be able to help you with your question, I know what you mean by the added stress, but some companies have to follow a strict absence policy but it should be supportive rather than make you worse.

I decided that I was taking time off work for at least a few weeks & would deal with what ever the consiquences are on my return to work.

ive now been told by OH that I'm unfit for work & I'm unable to return until they decide, I wasn't aware they were medicaly qualified to make this decision. In fact the only thing the succeeded in doing was winding me up, so I'm now sitting here furious with what was said.

i do get paid for being off sick, not forever tho, but how long can OH tell me I can't return to work for? Will my doctor be the person to liaise with OH & advise I am fit to work after some time away to allow me to recouperate?

    Hi everyone,

I'm really glad I checked the forum today - I didn't know about the format change and how it affected our updates, so I just assumed it had gone quiet and everyone was doing well!

I'm going to take a bit of time to read back over the recent posts, and will post an update later. I must admit it's great to see that everyone's here and posting - I was missing you all!

    Til later,

    Spence :-)

Hi guys, I'm just thinking that, in order to get our posts showing up in the old way i.e. in the order they're posted rather than as replies to various different CIT buddies, then perhaps we have to use the "Your reply to M68" box, the lady who started this whole discussion off 2 years ago. Now I could be barking up the wrong tree here, but hey, I'm game to try anything cos I'm fed up trying to scour the site for the latest posts, it's giving me a far worse headache than CIT ever did lol

    Right, here goes rolleyes .................

Well, that seemed to work ok biggrin

Right guys, maybe try it that way then? Or risk going into cyberspace?

Ha ha, I'll leave it with you wink

Hi all, hope everyone is doing OK.  I haven't been on for a couple of days as it's been a busy weekend, so just trying to catch up.  Have to say I don't like the format of the forums anymore, much more confusing and difficult to find comments etc so am going to try sticking to using the main reply box as others have suggested.

Inthewoods4 - thanks for asking how I'm doing on the increase.  It's Day 10 today for me on 30mg and whereas I thought the increase had pretty much gone without too much in the way of side effects, that's changed in the past couple of days and I've been waking up very anxious and shaky again and have also had headaches, nausea and major sweating to contend with.  Mood-wise I seem to have flatlined i.e. I don't feel great but don't feel really low either, kind of a plateau.  I'm hoping things will settle again soon and I'll pick up again but it's very frustrating and hard work keeping going at times.  Hope you're doing OK with it too.

Take care everyone, keep at it & we'll all get there!

    Hi Dougie,

I'm similar on the 30mgs, I think I thought I'd turned a corner, but then felt really low on Sunday and a little low this morning, although now I'm at work I feel a bit better. I always find the mornings the hardest part of the day. I think it's because I'm worried about how the day is going to pan out. xx

I also felt stressed about going into work, as I would worry about what the day may bring, but I soon decided I can't change what I don't know, so just take every day as it comes, step by step.

      Hi mike

usually OH provide a report for management but should liaise with your doctor. Sometimes companies will use their own doctor. However all support is to try to get the employee back to work. If it ever gets to the point where you feel you may be fit to go back but oh don't speak to your manager. You might be able to go back on reduced hours at first hope that helps

      Hi Paul,

are you saying not to speak with management if I want to return to work? Or are you recommending to speak with management/Hr? It's just the wording on your post

      cheers

Mike Paul is saying OH will not discuss you with your manager due to data protection. xxx hope this clarifys

      Hi mike/Anne

oh will usually share a report with management on your progress and share it with you so you know what it says.

I was suggesting you do speak to management if you do feel ready for a phased return to work at some point but oh don't

      hoe that helps

      Hi Anne/Paul

i now have an appt with oh next week, I'm not to fussy if they want to share the details of that report with management as I appreciate whatever we discuss will/should be 100% confidential. How do I go about getting a phased return when I decide to go back?

would that phased return mean loosing money, if I were to work say 6 hrs instead of my usual, or is the norm to pay the employee for the whole day, I just wouldn't want to loose any financial increment & then stress out about that once I decide to return.

      cheers

      hi Mike

When on a phased return to work, you do say 4 hours and the and the remaining hours you should have worked are paid as been still off sick, so you would maybe do a week at 4 hours, then the next week do 5 hours and so on till your back to normal hours, but with no loss of earnings,  the OH nurse at work will discuss this with you, make sure you only agree to what you feel able for.

      Hope this helps
