Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

    Hi Dougie,

I think this will pass, I think we've been so looking forward to getting better that we're expecting too much - I've also read that even an increase can take 4-6 weeks to kick in, so I think it's about giving it more time maybe? X

Yep, sounds like we're just being too impatient Inthewoods4!  I'm not a patient person anyway, like things sooner rather than later, so this feeling better really needs to bloomin' hurry up!! ;-)

I'm inpatient too!! I think it's also quite hard to remember what I was like before - I'm sure I was grumpy sometimes, espeically on a grey morning. I have a 1.5 hour commute to work which I hate, so that's never a good start to the day! X

I understand you saying it sounds too early for side effects but even though I had the anxity Monday. I started the pill Monday night n since then I have not been able to orgasm. I know I sound like a crazy person but that wa the only part of my life that made me feel better and now I'm feeling worse cause that has been taken away from me!!!

also it seems the pill controls the anxiety for about 10-12 hrs n then I need a Xanax cause I feel like I'm being choked!!! Has anyone had any of this.

Im feelin so horrible now cause even the good I had is gone.

Nicole maybe go back to the doc tell him whats happening, maybe try u on something else, Also CIT has a 36 hour life and the choking feeling will go, its all part of the anxiety, i had this as well, thought i had a large lump in my throat, but once cit kicked in, i had nothing not even the choking feeling, so hopefully u will get  back to normal soon on whatever u decide  is the right meds for you xx

      take care all

    Hi Nicole,

I take my CIT in the mornings around 10 o'clock as that's when I had my first one so I've just stuck to that time smile

As for your other question, well I doubt I could say anything useful there. My memory doesn't go back that far LOL biggrin

      Hi Nicole,

No honey. I'm afraid I don't know what Xanax does, haven't heard of it before. I hate taking new meds so it was bad enough for me just taking the CIT itself. But never at any time did I feel it wearing off, I either had the side effects or the feeling of being much better which is what I have now. To be honest I'm not sure whether to say to you to stick with it as it's very early days and it will get so much better or to go back to your doc as maybe it's not suiting you? Only you or your doc can decide honey. I hope things improve for you soon, I know a lot of us on here were very impatient at the start but you DO get through it.

      Good luck,

      Love Loulyn x

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying. To post a reply to the whole discussion use the Reply box at the top of the page under the initial post. I have asked for a general reply box to be put back at the bottom of the discussion pages - do you think this would make things clearer? There was an issue with notifications not being sent which has now been fixed so you should be receiving them again.

Wow! Thanks Anne! This format is a LOT better biggrin The posts have been put into the order they were written so we shouldn't miss any more now .... hurrah cheesygrin I think I'll drop them a wee note too about logging in. Does anyone else find that they are having to log in constantly for every email almost, even though the "remember me" box is ticked? Even MY memory is better than that box and that's saying something rolleyes

Well I'm off to the dentist this morning to see about a mouth guard. I hope it doesn't take long to make it up, this tight jaw is starting to feel like having toothache mad Which reminds me, Rick, haven't seen you for a few days? I hope that means your busy partying my friend wink

Inthewoods, I really hope you have a happy day today. It was interesting to read that you can't get excited about anything? I hope that passes quickly. Is that because you take CIT for depression & it maybe takes longer to work for that? I don't have depression but I'm taking it for anxiety & the other morning I went through to the kitchen & was jumping about like a two year old on Xmas morning because I had planted seeds for the first time in my life & they were peeking through the soil razz My friend didn't appreciate getting a text at 6.30 am lol lol

Have a great day everyone, keep smiling, it's infectious wink

Hi Loulyn, I am indeed taking it for depression, but I've had lots of anxiety too. I'm not feeling particulalry bad, but not very happy either! I think that I just need to give it a bit longer. I had CBT last night, and my therapist wants me to book three fun things just for me into the next few weeks - he says that reminding myself what I used to really enjoy will really help! Also, I think I just need to let go and not constantly monitor how I'm feeling - easier said than done!! X

First time poster here... Its been four weeks since I started taking citalopram (2 weeks at 10mg and 2 weeks at 20mg) I was prescribed it for generalised anxiety and panic disorder. The last three weeks have been horrible aside from the constant headaches and nausea, from the moment I wake up my body is just rushing with horrible nervous energy, muscles cramp and my teeth are continually chattering ALL day. I had hoped this was just a side effect that would pass, but after a month of it I'm starting to worry that this particular SSRI just isn't for me and I should maybe be thinking about trying another. I so wanted this medication to work for me as it was a miracle drug for my mother, she was literally back to her old self within two weeks, I know it can take longer than a month to start working and I know they say things can get worse before they get better, but my anxiety and panic attacks are ten times worse than before taking the medication and this constant teeth chattering morning, noon and night is just wearing me down. I don't actually suffer with depression but what I've been through the last month is definitively making me feel the lowest I've felt since my anxiety problems started two years ago. My sleeping has also become a lot worse since starting the medication, I wake up at 4am every day and can't get black to sleep.

So my question is do you think I should hang in there for a few more weeks? Or do you think given all the above it just sounds like Citalopram isn't for me and I should consider trying a different SSRI.

Finally, my doc did say that I could take Xanax to help me through this initial period, but personally I just don't feel comfortable doing that, it was already a big thing for me to finally start taking a SSRI and I don't want to really be using ANOTHER type of drug just to mask the symptoms that the SSRI is causing. If I had listened to him that would have meant I would have been on Xanax for four weeks now, when I hear it can be very addictive.

    Confused.... Help... Thanks
