Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Posted , 526 users are following.

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

Hi Dougie, How are you feeling? Still flat? X

    Hi Inthewoods4,

Still feeling much the same to be honest - just flat, but have to say today I'm a bit on the low side compared to the rest of the week.  I have forced myself to come out and see some work colleagues, but if I'd have had the option to stay curled up in bed today I would have taken it so I could keep myself to myself, just not the best mood today.

How are you doing, any better today?

    Doug.

    Hi Dougie,

Yes, me too. Maybe marginally brighter than yesterday, but not loads...

I asked my CBT about this yesterday and he said that possibly 30mg could be too much, but to give it another couple of weeks. It's all so hard isn't it - I wish someone could just tell me what to do to feel better! X

Hi all, New member here. It all started with a trip to my University Counsellor who informed me what I had dreaded over for the last 2 years (Having SAD). I went to my local GP who has prescribed me 10mg Citalopram a day. I have held off for the last 10 days taking the pills due to fear of the side effects. The internet is so vague and I have read of people going off it due to the side effects while others have little to none side effects at all. I dont want this to affect my my anxiety than it already is, however I am desperate, my anxiety seems to go through good and bad days but never improving overall. I am due CBT sessions as I believe this is the best way to solve SAD long term however the University in question is taking a long time to get a session system all planned up. I understand Cita pills wont make problems dissapear over night but what should I expect? How long until the ide effects do become less of a problem? If 10mg a day isnt enoughy then at what point should the dosage be increased (booking another follow up appointment 1 week after I begin taking them if i decide)? Is it possible the side effects are that bad that my studying for my close exams will be effected? Will peoople around me notice the changes?

      hey Jim,

you will notice a difference at about 6 weeks and ur doc will discuss then if u need an increase, I was like u really anxious about taking cit, kept them in my drawer for about 2 months till I became desperate and knew it was them or me, so glad i started them as feel great now, some folk dont get many side effects at all, but do persevere and stay strong x CBT is great too keep in touch, lots here to support you

Hi all ... I haven't been about for a while (mainly due to work and feeling somewhat knackered afterwards). Things are getting very slowly better but still having good and bad days and still nervy and anxious feelings at times. The morning shakes are lessening - some mornings are better than others. I'm finding my symptoms change with different side effects cropping up from time to time. I actually think that my dose (even at "only" 10mg) may be a bit high (after my failed reduction to about 5mg I reinstated to the full 10 when I should have really gone back up to about 7 - stupid me) so I might lower it very slightly to see if that makes a difference. I'm getting pretty sick of this instability after just over 8 weeks now.

Jim, I would try not to read too much into all our stories here. The first time I took Citalopram I had nearly no side effects at all, I just felt a bit spaced. Some side effects are a good thing as it means the drug is working but everyone is different so you may have very mild ones. Its best to discuss this with your GP and maybe start on a very low dose and build up gradually until you reach a point where things are going well for you. You're young and will adapt more quickly to the drug, plus it's your first time taking it which is generally easier in terms of severity of side effects. Again though, everyone is different.

Inthewoods and Doug - I'm the same, mostly flat with some remaining anxiety and certainly not stable plus still often feel "too switched on" (not in a nice way though). I'm not in any way patient either!

Hows my other 8 odd week mates doing? (Spence, Mike, Matilda and others!)

thats going to be a hard 2 weeks for you xx -----------------a bulldog chewing a wasp is another good Edinburgh saying if ur going about with a face like a long wet Sunday lol

Rick I agree with Loulyn 10 mg is only like an introductary dose, most people do move on to 20mg however we are all different so u must discuss with ur doc, but most of all u need to stick with it,

Loulyn enjoy ur old peoples soft food for the next couple of weeks, mashed veggies cooked beyond recognition, gravy and mashed tatties tinned fruit and dont forget the  prunes. lol

    Have a good weekend xx

    Big bugs everyone

Particularly bad at the minute. How do you all cope with breaking down and not knowing why? I just feel weak and powerless. It would be so much easier if I was dead, but I know I can't do it.

Nathan it is awful at the start and thats why we are on the cit too, but I promise it does get better, I was exactly the same as you, but u just have to perseverw in the knowledge all this will go away, its a chemical imbalance in your brain thats making you feel this way, so the cit will regulate this in a few weeks but we all get there, just unfortunate that it takes time to settle, but feel safe in the knowledge it changes and you will feel great "sunny" as Loulyn puts it and its a great word for it, cause u do sfeel sunny after feel like u do now for so long, so please stay strong come on here as much as u like we are all here for you, remember we have all been where you are now.

God, the first few day are awful, arent they? I took my first 10mg dose on Wednesday and the increased anxiety is something else. I just keeping repeating to myself 'This is chemical and it will pass'. It's a tiny bit better this evening but I still feel like I have bad stage nerves. Lots of deep breathing. Took to my bed yesterday. I've also had to force myself to eat, got a dry mouth, slight tinnitus, a case of the runs, insomnia and my face feels sort of tight/strange so these symptoms seem to fit the fairly standard side effects that people get. It's been encouraging for me to read that, for most people, things ease off. Really glad I found this forum.

Welcome Rebus, and yes we have all been where you are now, the deep breathing is so helpful and will be a life long tool for you, just persever in the knowledge it gets better, keep in touch, and stay strong, no matter what you go thru now it is just the chemical imbalance, and CIT will sort that out for you,
