Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Posted , 526 users are following.

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

    Hi all,

Been a little while again since I last posted, so thought I should give everyone an update.  I have been trying to keep up with the posts though!

Amy - thanks for thinking of me!  The reason I'm not posting as much is a good sign, as I'm generally doing a lot better at the moment.

I went back to see my GP today now that I've been on 30mg for just over a month, and am happy to say that I had good news for him - in general I am now feeling much more 'normal', and pretty much all side effects have now gone too.  Motivation is still an issue, although I am starting to do more and want to do more, but it's just not coming as easily as I'd hoped.  I often find I can't focus on things for too long before getting distracted and having to do something else, but I'm trying to work on this and hopefully this will improve.

I've also just been given my first appointment for CBT - first session this Thursday, so that will be interesting.  Nervous about it but also keen to get started in the hope it will help me further.

So I guess in summary at the moment I'm doing well,  much better than I was 4 months ago, but know I still have a long way to go!

I hope everyone is doing OK and making progress, if not all I can say is hang on in there as it really does get better if you keep at it & push through the tough times.

Take care everyone, and thanks for the support over the last few months.

    Doug.

Does anyone have a tingly achy feeling in their lower abdomen that doesn't seem to go away? Maybe from this drug? I don't know.

      Hi Dougie,

I'm really pleased you're feeling better, I think the 30mg was what you needed! I've been on it about the same time as you, and I'm feeling much better too. I still have the odd day where I feel a bit down/grumpy but I think a lot of that could be tiredness (my 3-year-old came in a 5.50am this morning!) The main thing is that now, thanks to CBT really, I know I can cope, and will feel better again soon. X

Hi Loulyn, Anne and many others who have helped me so much with their replies to my posts.

Am still yo yoing like mad and seem to have a few good days and then a BAD one follows.

Some of my symptoms have subsided a little but I still get this odd taste in my mouth-bit sour ( like when you were a kid and touched your tounge with a matchbox sized battery confused- bit weird but thats how it feels)

Am just finishing week 7 on Cit. and feel if I havent improved significantly will go back to GP and ask to be upped to 30mg. Am fed up with living with anxiety-just want to get back to me cry. I understand that  is a journey and in time I will improve, I just want to be able to be in a better place to be able to live again not exsist.

    Hi Anne and All

Good to hear from everyone - sorry I've been absent for a while. I have been pretty busy with a number of things including two of my grandchildren visiting from Dublin.

However a couple of weeks ago I had to stop taking Pregabalin for FM, as it was causing quite a bit of weight gain (and I'm not the slimmest of persons); also I was getting a strange type of confusion/shortterm memory loss which was disconcerting. So Preg had to go. Doctor offered me Gabapentin but I thought I'd try Amit once again and see if I can conquer the headaches it gave me. So I'm back on them and sleeping well once again. But there has been quite an increase in pain since the Preg stopped which is only just beginning to die down as amit starts to work.

Hey-ho! That's life. I continue with Cit - it does not cause me any problems and seems to control the depression I once had, so please keep at it, everyone!

Take care, one and all. Do hope you are keeping well, Anne.

OH my gosh I can finally type! I have been trying to post something for the past 3 weeks. How is everyone? I've had quite the eventful last few weeks. Everything was going great until I went on my third night out drinking since starting cit 20mg. Had a great, positive night until I got home and something just flipped inside of me. Que being rushed to A&E at 3am on a Thursday morning. 7 stitches later and I was seriously considering coming off cit. Psychiatrist persuaded me to continue and helped me realise it was just a moment of weakness. I'm still completely shocked at the seriousness of it and my anxiety is through the roof. I have vomited near enough every night since thinking about it. I'm trying to be positive and see this as a lesson learned. I also realised that I would be coping a lot worse if I wasn't on the cit.

I'm going on hols this weekend and I'm so scared something will happen.

Hi Amy, first of all look at how far you have come and thats all down to you, so be very proud of yourself, I hope u got on ok at the dentists, I do feel we can all have little blips as there are so many stresses in life in general, as long as we do some positive thinking and get past them, and get back to been ok again, let us know how you go as you will be happy to get your teeth fixed and look fab,and no pain, toothache is awful, also hope ur blip is now gone xxx

Hey Chris really good to hear from you, will have really cheered you up to see your grandchildren, hope ye had fun.

Sorry the Pregabalin had to go but you have ur healt to think of too, I hope the Amit is kinder to you this time round, I am still not back on the gabepentin but feel I really need to be, but fighting a bit longer, booked in for some pain injections in 2 weeks, so am dreading that, as never had these before. I also get a bit of confusion/shortterm memory loss noting major but enough for my closest to notice, so I spoke to Neuroligist and he said it can be due to tiredness caused by the mini strokes, but I told him if it doesnt improve I want a test for alzheimer's he just laughed at me and said it wasnt this, how is your tinnitus ?? I think I am just used to it now, will never accept it totally cause at quiet times it annoys me, but nothing I can do about it. sad hope yours has quietened down now. I am so glad your sleeping well, as thats so important for our recovery, seen a tv programme the other night saying sleep is more important than anyone realised, and if you are unwell you can sleep for ages which is your bodies way to get better. I am up for that haha just now I can sleep so well, hard to get up in fact.

Anyway I hope all goes well you have suffered for long enough take care and keep in touch,

    Anne XX smile

Hey Laura try to keep away from the drink, its really not good to take with CIT and you were doing so well, hope you ok now, if you feel like this again, please call and speak to someone instead, or post on here, get your feelings out, have a fab holiday and just tell folk ur on medication and cannot drink with it, bet your still great fun without the drink, and just think too you wont have any hangovers smile

Anne xxxx smile keep in touch.

Charlotte do continue as you are getting there day by day, its strange the taste in your mouth, do you get dry mouth too ?? if so ask the doc for artificial saliva, its really good and tastes great lol hope you are back to yourself very soon, be strong. Anne XX

Doug  its great to hear your feeling so much better, well done you have been strong, and it is a tough journey so be proud of yourself. xx

Laura, the trazdone will help you sleep and that will help you so much, I was prescribed this before CIT but I wouldnt take it as too nervous, but I was the same about CIT and just had to take something in the end and  the CIT won, are you still taking the CIT as well ?? I hope you get well very soon, and you defo need sleep, this was my worse thing not sleeping for days walking the floors every night, getting more fustrated by the minute. so I hope you have got some sleep now.

Take care and stay strong and keep in touch xxxx Anne smile

    Hi Louise

So good to hear form you and that your doing well, great support for newbies to see folk getting thru this and coming out the other end. I am so glad the deep breathing still helps you, I must admit it still helps me if I every feel anxiety may come on, a close friend died on Monday as I started to feel anxiety kick in so the deep breathing then kicked in and I calmed myself, still a very sad time, and makes you feel humbled to feel so well.

      Hi Anne,

after the 1st 2 weeks on 10mgs & the about 5 weeks on 20mgs, I have today had my dosage upped to 40mgs, didn't feel any different on the 40, but it may take a few addy to bed in, I'm not quite sure.

anyone else went from 20 - 40mgs & had to wait a bit longer for results?

      thanks all

Hi everyone!! My gosh, it's been months since I posted. That's a good thing as my anxiety has been really stable, almost forgettable at times. However, I have a dilemma.  I'm going to my doctor next week, this is my first visit since I started cit in January  (I try to avoid the doctor at all costs...lol...but he won't refill anymore unless I go). I am still just on the 10mg and have really felt good, but I am considering upping it to 20mg because I know it will push me a little farther in the right direction.  Just wanted your opinions.......when I started the 10mg, I had ZERO side effects.  Did anyone else have no side effects? And when you upped the dose, did you experience anything then?  Thanks everyone for being there even if I don't visit as often as I should.

Christy its great you had no side effects, but do visit your GP as they just need to know how ur getting on, and 10mg is minimum so I doubt he would take you off it if you didnt want to come off, speak to him about upping for a while to see if it helps you more, but its good your getting on well

Take care and let us know how u get on.

my doc just started me on Citalopram, i am so nervous because i just tool my fist half pill and already feeling sick the headaches are so painful!!! and the postings kinda scared me. I would like to know what else am i in for with this med?

Hi lety89tx,  what mg were you prescribed? I started on 10mg in January.  After my first dose....I was an instant mess. I was able to relax some and realized the sick feeling and "side effects" were just in my head and my anxiety. After the 3rd day, I felt completely fine. I can honestly say I had NO side effects (at least none that I noticed). Hopefully the headache and sick feeling is just nerves and you will have same experience I did.   Someone from this thread told me once that most people who take a medication and have no negative experience don't seek out support. So it's natural to read some negative experiences on here. But, you will also get some great encouragement and support. When you do take your pill, make sure to take it with a meal, that should reduce the risk of feeling sick.  Try to relax about taking it (I know....easy for me to say).  I had my pills for almost 2 months before I took the 1st one and cried the whole day I was going to take it because I was so scared so I can certainly empathize with you.  Hang in there...it could take weeks to notice a difference, but it is worth it.  Best of luck and keep us posted.

Just as Christy said, its not really side effects your having after half a tablet its just the nasty old anxiety playing tricks on you and very real it is too, but its the anxiety ur feeling not the CIT and I realised this once I had been on cit for a few weeks, dont let the storys scare you everyone is different, and its all our anxieties messing with us that causes these feelings but once CIT kicks in - the anxieties go and you are back to normal, be strong as it does take time for your body to adjust but try to think positive, CIT is good not bad. Its my saviour to be honest, but can only see that now.

    Hi everyone.

I saw the psychiatrist on Tuesday.  She reduced the seroquel to 100mg - take that for 2 weeks and then come off it.  She's leaving me on the cipramil 50mg.  She did suggest adding a second antidepressant or changing the cipramil to Effexor but I'm going to see how I get on.

I've had 2 very upsetting evenings.  I just sobbed.  Not sure what triggered it off.

I hope everyone else is doing well.
