Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

I am new to this forum, but I see that you've been on Celexa for about a year. How is that working for you.I just switched from Lexapro to Celexa....second day in,and I do not like the side effects,at all!Even though they are similar drugs, the Lexapro never caused me to have side effects.I was on Lexapro for 8 years, and thought it wasn't working anymore,so my new doctor (I recently moved to a different state)wanted me to try Celexa with Ambien at night,as opposed to Lexapro and Seroquel.I don't know if I should stick it out with the Celexa or go back to the Lexapro.I also take Suboxone .

Day 55 of 20mg Citalopram and having got through the awful side effects and started to feel " normal " again I've had a week or so on a constant low, the doctor has upped my Citalopram to 30g as of today and hoping I don't have end up going through the side effects again!! One thing I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced increase of body temperature, I've had it from the start and thought it would ease off. I used to be a cold person , but since starting Citalopram I'm constantly hot, I wake up in the morning , or sometimes through the night wet through !! I no it's only a small price to pay but thought it would have stopped by now? Or is it something I will always have to deal with ?!

    Hi all,

i hope everyone in doing ok.

just a quick question, I've noticed that I now have bruises mostly on my arms from being out in the garden, but I never really bruised before, I haven't noticed banging off anything & I was just wondering if the CIT had anything to do with it?

im now on 40mgs for the last week after the doc agreeing to go up from 20mgs.

    thanks

Hi Mike  Citalopram can inhibit Blood Platelet counts which sounds worse then it is. Might be worth taking some iron pills red meat.green leaf veggie  for a while and see if it improves.  if it does not improve then  you need to see your GP for a blood draw to check your full blood count, but i think it should settle in a month. check the side effects on your paperwork with your citalopram, you will see lowered platelet count is a side effect  all the best Dave

Hi everyone. My name is Tammy and I have been reading the forum for hours and hours today. I was recently diagnosed with anxiety disorder and given citalopram. I started taking it and have been sick ever since (Im on day 4). I am currently on the fence about continuing with the meds because I dont know if I can deal with these side effects. My side effects are nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and highly increased anxiety. I didnt eat for 3 days and lost 4 lbs in 2 days. The nausea has eased off some but the anxiety is through the roof. The Dr gave me xanax to supplement while the cit takes affect but Im terrified of getting addicted to the xanax. I know without a doubt I can not cope with the severe anxiety while the cit kicks in, which is why Im on the fence about all the meds. Anyone have any insights about the xanax or other supplemental meds that arent as addictive?

TYA7474 please stick with it, we were all the same as you but stuck with it and came out the other side, it was tough but sooo worth it, remember how awful the anxiety is do u want to go back to that and delay ur recovery, defo not, be strong and you will get there, try to avoid the xanax as much as possible, embrace the anxiety and decide its there but now you are going to beat it. good luck, and perseverance is pay off x

Thanks for the support Anne. I do have a few questions tho. If I remember right, didn't you stay at 10mg for a while? My Dr started me off at 10mg for 1 week then wants to me go to 20mg. Of course Im worried going up to the 20mg is going to make the side effects worse. Also, I am curious what other peoples symptoms were before they started with their meds. I had a lot of dizziness and nausea and some tightening/pains in my chest and tingling everywhere and the Drs couldnt find anything physically wrong with me. They are convinced my anxiety causes my symptoms while I am convinced my symptoms cause my anxiety. Also, does it really take 4-6 weeks for the side effects to go away or will they gradually start easing off before that? I know everything has been asked a bazillion times but reassurance is so nice. Thanks so much for the help.

      Hi Tammy

I was exactly like you, and the symptoms are defo caused by the anxiety as all my just disappeared as soon as the Cit kicked in, I couldnt believe how my mind could act against me ike this but I assure you it does get better, I stayed on 10mg for a month before increasing but should have done it sooner looking back, it was cause I was absolutly tyerrified of taking the cit as never took anything like this before, I also had this hugh lump in my throat that I thought I had cancer, I couldnt swallow or anything, but when cit kicked in there was nothing there and no lump or pain, so rest assured it is the cit, I started feeling much better on week 6 as it takes the body time to adjust, but stay strong give it a chance and increase like ur doc says especially now as u wont feel any worse than before the Cit, 10mg is only like a starting block.

      Take care

    Hi,

I haven't checked in for about 3 months as my life has been pretty great!

For all the newbies, I started 20mg of cit in September last year and increased to 40mg mid November.  I took 3 months off work and wasn't sure if I was suffering with depression or anxiety?

Almost 8 months on I know it wasn't depression it was actually anxiety. I had counsellimg for 3 months and it really helped me to deal with how I had been feeling and helped me to understand how evil my mind could be when it got into a bad cycle.

I have started to think about reducing the cit now but if I do Iwill reduce it very very slowly.  I suffered all of the side effects and don't really want to suffer again coming off the tablets.

I just wanted to say that wherever you are on your journey there will be an ending to how you feel and eventually you will be back to leading a normal life.

Let me know if you have any questions x

Hi Anne, it has been a very long time since I have posted on here! My life had changed since those early dark days of starting my citalopram journey! So today I start my journey of coming off them. 15 months of a 40 mg dosage and I feel ready to start my life free of tablets. I am not rushing though I plan to drop to 30mg for 4 to 6 weeks and take it from there and reduce slowly. I was going to start reducing in November but the doctor advised waiting until spring as the winter and dark days lower mood !

I will keep you updated with how I get on. I haven't suffered any anxiety for a year now and I've managed a house move. My daughter starting school and the death of a friend in that period of time.

Wishing anyone tarting their citalopram journey well. There is light at the end if the tunnel x
