Anyone suffering similar symptoms???

Hi last year I went for a endoscopy and was diagnosed with a large hiatus hernia, it's taken me 2 years of complaining to my doctor to get that far after suffering server acid, wind and bloating, since Christmas last year my symptoms have seemed to worsen, symptoms now include heart palpitations, increased heart rate, short of breath, dizziness, constant tiredness, and trapped wind which makes my head feel like it's going to explode, the heart palpitations and increased heart rate started to worry me so I went back to my doctor who sent me for an ECG and a heart Eco, has anyone else suffered from any of these or similar symptoms?

I am currently under a doctor who I'm having a consultation with next week to hopefully operate, fingers crossed!!!

Hi Luke, sorry to hear of your problems. I have an hiatus hernia which I have had for over 20 years. I had an endoscopy last year and was told it was mild but I am having a lot of symptoms. Recently, I have been getting severe chest pain, it is like a heavy feeling and getting worse. I ended up in hospital 6 weeks ago and was in for 10 days. I had scans and bloods taken because they  thought it was my heart but scans / blood tests came back normal. I  also get palpitations every day and sometimes they last all day. I had an ECG and found I had ectopic beats and one of the dr's at the hospital said a hiatus hernia can cause this. I ended up phoning for an ambulance again 3 days ago because the chest pains / palpitations was so bad. I had bloods and another 2 ECG but they came back normal except for the ectopic beats. I am now convinced the hiatus herrnia is responsible. I am getting chest pain at times when I eat food. I will have to go and see my local Dr and tell him I need somrthing done. The chest pains feel like a heart attack. I had a barium swallow about 5 weeks ago but the hiatus hernia was not mentioned. I forgot to say, I am getting shortness of breath like a suffocating feeling but seems to come on when sitting down rather than walking about. Hope you have some success with your appointment.

Watch those palpitations, you shouldn't have them all day if your heart beats are over 160 per minute you should have further investigations, maybe a beater blocker will help but see a good cardiologist.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I saw a private cardiologist last week and he put me on flecainaid but have not started on them yet because I have to wait until I hear from my local Dr so he can prescribe them. The private Dr is also writing to the hospital I was in recently, for the results of all the tests I had done there. My next follow up appointment at the hospital is july 2015 too long to wait that's why I went private. The hospital put me on Bisoprolol but had side effects so stopped them.

I have got another appointment 6 weeks time with the private Dr to see how I am getting on with the meds.

Gosh you really have to wait in U.K Havnt you? I am in Cape Town & our service is very quick! One can get sorted in a week, but of course we pay medical aid monthly but for those who can afford it , is good service. I had a Cardiac ablation to correct my short circuit & it worked well with a small dose of bisocor, that was 8 years ago.I wish you well .

Hi Luke, hiatus hernia is a surgical condition. It is actually a protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm. Dull pains in the chest, shortness of breath, heart palpitations are common symptoms associated with it. Even in many cases patients do not have any symptom. Surgical treatment is available and it's cure hiatus hernia. As your operation is planned next week. It will surely cure your hiatus hernia and you will get relief form all these symptoms.

Hi Luke, you have mentioned that you have palpitation and rapid heart rate. It is generally occurs due to the vagus nerve irritation, so don't be panic. Acid reflux is also a common symptom in hiatus hernia. Physician generally prescribes antacids to manage acid reflux. As I said, surgery is the treatment of choice for hiatus hernia. Hopefully your surgery will be planned soon and you will get relief from all these symptoms.

Dear Luke, i am so sorry to hear of your problems and I hope you get some good treatment that will help improve your quality of life.

I think I have a HH, although not been diagnosed as yet, despite several trips to GP. I seem to have flare ups when my chest is so tight and find it difficult to take a deep breath, it also makes me feel very tierd and grouchy when having one of these.

I am intending to seek medical help again with this to see if I can get a proper diagnosis.

I watch what I eat very carefully and keep away from dairy and fats, but despite this still have flare up currently.

I realy hope you get some improvement with yours. I don't think people who do not suffer with this realsie the impact on well-being.

    Good luck

Hi Luke just get your heart checked.. An E.C G will do it. I mistook a short circuit for my Hiatis Hernia. Also watch what you eat as certain foods can trigger off palpitations. I take Nexiam every day which keeps it under control. I've had mine for 25 years, no operation, just managed it. Stress also plays a part &  Wine..very acidic. Good luck.
