Anyone try the ROM once a month antibiotic treatment for GA?

Posted , 25 users are following.

I went back to my dermatologist today and she said that a lot of her patients with GA have had positive results with taking 3 different antibiotics at one time once month for 3 months. Anyone else try this yet? Its called ROM Therapy.I'll keep you all posted...

My physician would only put my minocycline. She said one of the others causes ruptured tendons and some other horrible side affect from the other. I filled the minocycline prescription but never took it. Going for a second opinion next week.

I saw the derm at the University of Iowa Vincent Liu. He has seen lots of GA. He is having me do minocycline and paquinal 2 times a day for 2 months. If this doesn't help he will rx the full ROM. He has had success with the treatment he started me with. I feel hopeful!!

Hi Morgan, yes I have been on Rafampin, minocycline, and olfloxacin.  I took it for a year once a month and my GA was gone.  Thinking that the antibiotics killed it I stopped.  The GA came back two-fold and I went back on the antibiotics for another 2 years with no change in the breakouts.  I just stopped because it seemed to have no affect on it.  Just saw my dermatologist who wants to put me on plaquinel which is used for a host of autoimmune diseases.  I am reluctant right now because after a visit to Florida for 2 weeks I find that the outbreak is calm lacking the firey active appearance as before the visit.  They say the sun does help with this condition.  Not sure if I stayed on ROM if it would have kept actively controlling this disease.  I would try it and keep talking with your Dr with regards to discontinuing it.  I will keep all posted on whether I start plaquinel and how it works if I do try it.

My GA started about 3 years ago at 59 with a small ring on my foot (which I thought was from a bug bite) and my dermatologist did a visual diagnosis. For a year  it did not spread much ( used the prescribed cream on my legs and thighs) and I was taking a daily OTC antihistamine for season issues. Them I had elevated liver enzymes and was diagnosed with fatty liver and the doctor took me off all meds except Vit. D. They did lots of tests and did not find an auto immune disease or diabetes. I made lots of lifestyle changes - diet, exercise, limited alcohol - and am in the best shape I have been in for years and liver is healthy again. Last fall my GA (generalized) really started spreading on my elbows and back so all my dermatologist would do was prescribe  the light treatments UVB with the cream - did it for several months which really did not make much difference so I recently stopped it. Went to have allergy testing to see if that was an issue (food and environment) and my back was so broken out the Doctor put me on Prednesone which cleared up or suppressed my GA within a week so they could test me - no allergies. After 2 weeks on med most of the GA was not visable. My dermatologist (for over 15 years) is willing to keep me on low dose Prednesone currently and look over all the variety of treatments (including ROM) and medications used for GA from my on-line searches. I will let you know what happens if I do the ROM or other meds - wish there was more definate research on what causes GA so they could actually treat it effectively. I really appreciate all the posts and information shared here.

Had a 2n opinion last week and she has put me in the ROM therapy. Start tonight. Hoping this will do the trick. I have been taking 10 mg of Zyrtec in the meantime and no change. The Dermatologist seemed quite positive this would help. Keeping fingers crossed!!!

How is the ROM therapy working for you? My dermatologist did a biopsy so now my GA diagnosis is official. Off Prednisone since end August so my generalized spots are back but mostly leg and thighs and not as much on my back. Dr seems willing to try other options but seems to be dragging his feet- or still researching.

I’ve had GA for about 5 years plus. I did the ROM therapy, started in November and by Feb, it was gone except for light spots still on my stomach. Has yet to return so I would give it a try!

My spots are slowly fading. Definitely better, but slow process. I will be taking my 5th dose in about 3 weeks and then have a follow up appt with my dermatologist. I'm anxious to see what she thinks and to see if she will continue with the meds or take me off and see what happens. It's worth a try for you... hope your doctor will agree at some point!!

Hopefully your doctor won't used the low dose prednisone for very long. It isn't good for you long term. I've been on the minocycline and paquanil for 1 month. I'm not sure I see a change yet, but my derm wanted me to try it for 2 months before he did the full ROM treatment. Keep us posted!!

I know I won't be able to stay on prednisone but right now I am happy to have clear skin for the first time in almost 2 years- I have tried to stay positive and not feel self conscious about my legs and back but it is hard to do in the summer . I will let you know what happens.

I did a spray tan which helped hide mine until I had a natural tan.

Sally Hansen makes an aerosol leg make up that's water resistant that I have used occasionally and helps. Play golf - use sunscreen of course- so my legs were tan and most GA was on back of legs. My GA on my back was more flesh colored but pretty wide spread. Waiting to hear from my dermatology practice about what they are willing to try next.

I did rom therapy last year. Didn't work for me.

I was on Paquinal and minocycline for 6 weeks and had tremendous response. Unfortunately I had a weird side effect from the Paquinal so will be starting ROM as soon as the pharmacy gets it in.

Hi, what sort of reaction did you have? I've just started taking Plaquenil 1x 200mg tablet per day and would be very grateful of any advice.

Sorry the Paquinal didn’t work. So have you started the ROM and if so any results?
