I went to the doctors over a year ago with pain under my right rib!, which now is constant!!. He was reluctant to send me for tests, but in the end he sent me for an ultrasound which showed a polyp in my Gallbladder. They said that wont be causing me the pain, although I get a stabbing pain in my shoulder blade and belch constantly when eating of drinking. Slowly the pain has got worse and I feel like there's a golf ball under my ribs, my diaphragm feels swollen, like a stitch, the pain goes stabs like a stinging mussel!. Then I started getting acid burning, badly, constantly!, the ppi's seem to make it worse, none of the tablets worked!!. They did a colonoscopy to rule out the bowel, as i'm so bloated I look pregnant all the time. That didn't show much, has 2 ct scans, mri, a gallbladder function test, then had endoscopy which showed the hernia and a phstudy test that show high levels of reflux. And that's it, left me too it. I'm now in constant pain, burning in my chest, bloated, can't eat anything without it hurting and burning!!!.

I got so desperate I paid 200 pounds to go private, and been told its all in my head!!!. I was tested for helicobacter which was negative!. I'm totally at my whits end, and at a dead end!!.

I was recommended to see a allergy testing clinic, so I paid again for tests, she said I had diary intolerance, something picking up on my gallbladder, maybe sludge, high levels of protein and helicobactor!!!. I have all these herbal remedies (more money), and says they will work but I have totally lost all hope!!, anyone out there that can help???? :-(

    Hi Leslie

Glad I was able to give some help. How it affects people differs so much. Some, like Barney, do not have pain and some people don't even know they have a HH. Chronic pain is another issue in itself - sometimes called nerve pain - Pain Management clinics can help, and it can be very severe. I tend to get the stitch type pain a lot and used to be in pain all the time. It is depressing but you are not alone - sometimes you just need to take some medication to get relief, and there may be one that helps so it is worth trying out things like Gabapentin.

I have managed to get on an NHS Pain Management Programme which is going to be helpful and have met people already in very severe pain all the time for various reasons. Just do not know how they cope. Have they checked everything for you, taken blood tests etc?Galdbladder is often the culprit - small stones can be excruciating. Mine has been checked so many times for this pain but there is nothing wrong. Just get a proper check through the gastro-enterology dept of your local hospital. Then ask to be referred to Pain Management clinic - there are specialist centres in many major hospitals now.

If you like curries - go Ayurvedic! Hope you find some way of coping especially with the demands of family and work. Best wishes.

Hi again. I have been referred to a pain clinic, he gave me medicated patches to put over the area which don't work!!!. I'm not due to go back till November!!!. Yes I have had blood tests 3 times but that was a while ago, I think I should get a retake now. The pain has worsened and constant and I'm so bloated I look pregnant!! I can feel something there and if it didn't show in the last scans I think it would now!. I need another MRI scan but looks like I will have to pay for one!. I guess I'm learning to live with it!!! :-(

    Hello

The medicated patches? Which area do you use them for? Maybe the wrong kind? Just a thought.

He told me to cut them in half and use half on the back pain and half on the front, but they fall off and don't make any difference!!!

I must say have never heard of pain-kiling patches that can be cut in half. All I have ever come across are there are patches that contain local anaesthetic which I was given for shingles - medicated patches that you might be able to cut in half.

Only pain killing patches I ever had to use contain drugs like Fentynal, Morphine or Burprenophine which come in different strengths - cannot cut these in half - either they are too small or would leak if cut. In fact they advise you not to cut through them on the packets. What are they called - always like to know what new pain-killing medicines are around? Hope you feel better.

They are called Versatis (lidocaine) medicated plaster. They are barking up the wrong tree, telling me I have nerve damage now!. Ihave all the symptoms of Gallbladder problems, and I have this Hernia. I had such a bad day today, I was gripping my side all day, i'm going to have to go back, I cant function like this!! :-(

Hello- not sure I can really help but Lidocane is the local anaesthetic that just numbs the skin used for thiigs like shingles Don't know why your doctors would give it for nerve pain - unless they don't believe you or something. That happened to me a lot with this kind of pain. Think you my need something like Gabapentin. I have met patients who find it helps to dumb down the pain if not get rid of ii. Hope you find something that gives you some release.

Is that a tablet?. They are just fobbing me off cause they don't have a clue whats wrong!!, Got doc's again on Friday, my hubby is coming with me, going to ask for another MRI, even if I have to pay for it!!!. Really feeling scared now, I have 3 kids, 2 young and I keep crying thinking I won't see them grow up!

Are you seeing a gastroenterologist about your hernia. It's probably your hernia causing the pain and reflux.

Maybe discuss having surgery if the medication isn't helping.

Has anyone considered Esophyx tif to repair the hernia. I am looking at this instead of Nissan fundoplication and wondered if anyone had any experience of it?

Never heard of Esophyx - have you been informed about this procedure from a doctor? Would love to know how this works?

I'm due to go to the chronic pain clinic on the 10th October, I'm going to push for more tests or another scan. It has to be the hernia that's causing this pain! Not heard of any surgery! They have offered me nothing!!

Hi I put a link in my last note and it seems to be taking a while for it to be approved. If you google Esophyx there are some good articles. Basically it is done via endoscope and then the hernia is fixed that way, so no incisions made. There is a surgeon at the Nuffield in Leeds that does it. Also there is a Daily Mail article which should come up if you search and that says it is available on Nhs. Looks interesting.....

Thanks Catherine - presumably this would be for small Hernia's do you think? I think I have a fairly large sliding HH.
