I don know if it's a coincidence or not, but after my first one I had a terrible jaw, ear pain, all the one side of my face. I ended up with a tooth splitting and had to be extracted. Now again, 6 weeks po, I have the same same pain...I'm trying to ease the pain with Alevbut it doesn't seem to be working. I have a funny feeling  that a dentist app is in my n

    Hi Anne!

The blood thinner shots I took for two weeks following surgery brought on bleeding in my gums and throbbing in my jaw where my impacted wisdom tooth had been for YEARS without any issue. I have had periodontal surgery several years ago to correct any gum issues, so the bleeding in my gums following surgery last year was quite unexpected, too!

I had surgery a couple months ago to have my impacted wisdom tooth removed. Amazingly, all bleeding in my gums stopped completely, and the throbbing in my jaw is gone, too.

Even a wisdom tooth that doesn't hurt CAN be a real catalyst for other phantom pain in the mouth and in the jaw!

Could you have a wisdom tooth that MIGHT be a culprit?

Medications taken and anesthesia used during surgery takes awhile to be eliminated from the body. Maybe medications etc. are causing you trouble.

A trip to your dentist probably would be a good idea. He/She MIGHT refer you to another specialist for an evaluation.

Teeth that hurt and gums that hurt REALLY are annoying!😲

I hope you will feel better very soon!💗

    Hi Anne,

At first/second week I had some slight/medium teeth pain, didn't think too much of it. In recent days have had some slight sensitivity pains.

Not sure if its related to op or meds, but had crossed my mind.

    Interesting question.

    Take care,

    Alan

Check with surgeon and dds. There are 2 schools of thought on antibiotics prior to dental work to prevent infection. ( so much potential of germs in the mouth). Some do....one don't. Both of my people say absolutely. After having staph twice in the joint I feel like it's a small inconvenience.

Follow up. I did get in to see my dentist. He took X-rays and found nothing interesting that it was 6 weeks post op from the first one that this happened. Weird! But the first one did have a crack, which he couldn't detect but two days later it had to be extracted because it split in two. So he's puzzled again. He gave me some Tylenol 3, with codeine to try for a couple of days. If this doesn't work he'll send me to a specialist. He gave me his home phone number in case I need it. Both my surgeon and dentist agree that antibiotics be given prior to any thing other than an exam. The surgeon sent me home with a letter for my dental files.

Thanks for all of your responses. So now I'm back on drugs again! Just as I was getting cleaned uprolleyes

I take two CYPRO an hour before my dental cleanings and one CYPRO six hours later. No problem, and it makes me feel confident that I am warding off any potential infection. From what I gather, it is a small thing that will prevent big trouble. I am ALL FOR THAT!

Glad you went and checked with your dentist.

I guess we all have to remember that our body is affected in ways we may not realize. One assault (TKR) in our leg can affect other parts because medications enter us and into our bloodstream to help us but CAN change balance in other areas of our body.

      It is all very complicated!

Wishing you answers on your pain and relief FROM it!😊

Hi, Anne.  I am so glad you asked this question.  I started having a tooth ache about 3-4 weeks post.  I went to the dentist at 4 weeks post and found that I needed two root canals in my molars. One had a small crack.  The dentist believes this may be due to my gritting my teeth too much in my sleep.  I wear a mouth guard to prevent my teeth from my grinding, but it doesn't help the pressure I put on my back teeth when I clamp down at night.  Now my theory is that this happened due to the TKR and the pain.  I have had one root canal and have scheduled the other because I don't tolerate that type of dental work very well.  Then I have to go back and have the 2 teeth crowned.  Additionally my bridge fell out at 6 weeks post and I had to visit the dentist at that time to have it glued back in.  I also had my 6 month cleaning scheduled during this period and they found a cavity which I have also scheduled to go back and have my dentist fill.

All in all, I will have been to the dentist 6 times before I even reach 3 months post.  I have never experienced this much hassle with my teeth in such a short period of time.

Doctor advised me to make sure and take antibiotics 1 hour prior to any dental appointment.  Sort of a pain to make sure to get the dose each time but I understand it could prevent a very bad situation from occurring.  So I do as I am told.

I don't believe any of this is due to any medication I had to take as I researched all 6 prescriptions that I was sent home with from the hospital.  I just think it was the stress of the TKR. I routinely visit my dentist (every six months) for checkups so I don't neglect my teeth.

I hope your dental visit goes well.  Let us know.

    Carol
