Would love to hear from anyone with this chronic condition and how you are handling the symptoms- left sided rib, chest, back pain with shortness of breath and over production of mucus with cough. Doctors say nothing to be done about it!

hi  some years ago  i was diagnosed with   pleural thickening    and effusion of the right  pleural cavity  .. drained  the fluid proved to have  high concentrations of  protein which alarmed the medics   ,, keyhole biopsies were taken which were inconclusive..   Ct   scan showed deterioration after three weeks  so..   a  pleural decortication was performed ...  ie  removal of the right sided viceral  pleura..     the resulting  biopsy showed no  cancerous cells   so it was deemed that  the pleural plaques were from exposure to asbestos at some point in my life.    two years on i have an impressive scar which is   sometimes troublesome  with  pain and tightness     internal scarring restricts lung function on that side but  i can work, and  with  antibiotics the  bronchectasis  is controllable... if you have doubts about anything  ask to be referred to a good   thoracic  consultant

Hi reg1945, Thanks so much for your reply. I have had follow up CT scan with several pulmonologists looking it over who have concluded, while condition is there, nothing worrisome. Thankfully, symptoms of pain and difficulty breathing have disappeared. Love to hear how you're getting on. Liketoknow

Looks like I am just starting on this journey. I have just been told that I have atelectasis in left lung and I have an elevated hemidiaphragm. They found this because I have had bad breathing problems and hypertension stage 2. The chest xray was for my heart and they came back with these lung issues. ( My ecg had said I had LVH in my heart ).  They have given me antibiotics and I have to have another xray later this month. GP have refer me to a respiratory team.  Everything I have read in the past couple of days says there is treatment for this condiditon. If I was you I would go back and have another talk with your doctor.

I am having an xray on Monday, I see my GP on friday morning to get the results of that. I have been booked into the Cardio-Respiratory dept at the hospital for an Echocardio also friday. I assume i will get a call the week after with the results. GP has also mentioned a CT Scan. Will let you know what they find. Best regards Eddie
