Hello there i have finally been put forward for discussion for surgery on my aortic valve. I have had 2 cardioversions which have both failed and on weds my cardiologist said the option of surgery is going to be discussed at his weekly meetings. We talked about the options and agreed on human aortic valve instead of a mechanical one. Ive been on bisporal 2.5mg for past yr and half and am now starting on digoxin again. Got a mri in next few months and surgery next yr at long last aftrr 4 yrs of wanting it done. Has anyone been in this situation ? Im 39 and 40 in Jan. So big yr next yr for me.

A human valve is not a common option as they are obviously in shorty supply but at your age would last a lifetime. The norm though at your age is a mechanical one and a lifetime on Warfarin. I had a porcine tissue valve (pig) fitted and they are now said to be so good that they can last a long time.
If having your aortic valve replaced ask them to remove your left atrial appendage at the same time. The LAA is where blood clots form that cause strokes.

Ive never spoken to anyone who has had a human valve replaced so i imagine it isnt common. Are you sure it isnt a pig or cow valve?
I have a mechanical aortic valve and a mechanical mitral valve.
Did you get a choice between mechanical and tissue?
Is there a reason for it not being mechanical? I would have presumed this would of been the best option at your age to prevent the chances further surgery. Have you had any previous heart surgery?
