APOS therapy realigns the weight put onto your joints. Before my knees became very bad I would use pads in my shoes to shift the weight bearing areas and relieve the pain. Many of us have osteoarthritis because of loose ligaments which allows the joints to slip more, or our skeletons are aligned in such a way that we " track" differently so putting weight onto one specific area instead of it being spread over a greater area. Muscle tone is also very important.

What the shoes in APOS therapy do is first, they measure how you are walking and the individuals weight bearing distribution then, the soles and heels are fitted with devices that spread the weight load and cause a slight instability. This allows other areas of the joint to take some of the strain and the instability retrains the muscles.

It sounds as though it may be helpful in the early stages of osteoarthritis but once you are bone on bone a replacement is probably the best solution

hi i spent 300 euro on orthotics for my shoes they felt nice but it didnt work for me ,i now feel that if i was walking one way for over 50yrs and then all of a sudden the orthotics re aline the way my foot is on the ground that my foot says hello whats going on im walking different and result was cartilage problems and futher down the road ive now had bi lateral tkr so no i think its a waste of money if you have millege on the clock .it would work for children as there feet are still growing and it would help them not in future years end up like me  good luck to you i hope it works for you

Orthotics helped me enorously  with my flat foot problem, but I felt that it actually exacerbated the knee problem, . . but possibly  it was just that the knee had reached the point of no return.  I suppose if it isn't too wildly expensive it's worth a try before going down the TKR road??

Thanks for the reply. I think the pain in my knee is so intense as it feels like bone grating on bone that my only option is to have a knee replacement. However I am very worried about the operation and just looking for other alternatives.

Apos therapy is not cheap and although it sounds tempting I think that it is really too good to be true

I think you are on the right track Christine. It would be wonderful to have an alternative to a total knee replacement but at this point in time their is not. A knee replacement by an excellent surgeon in a specialised unit is the way to go.

Shop around, ask questions, find out what different centres do. Look into rehab facilities, research proven ways of reducing the pain.

reassure yourself that after the op and the rehab you will have a greatly enhanced quality of life

      Thanks Sheila

I have already been researching surgeons for some time and there seems to be one who has been recommended by several different health professionals and he performs a large number of knee replacements . I think that I will have to make another appointment to go back and see him and set the ball rolling.

You will not regret it Christine. 12 weeks down the track now after having both knees done at the same time & it so brilliant to walk without pain. Get your life back.

Well done Christine. It really is a life changing op but it's no picnic. If you take the initiative and decide on your surgeon and the type of treatment you want at least you feel you are in control and are not having you operation dictated by others.
