Apparently I have blepharitis, but now not so sure

Hi everyone, I'm new to this group! 6.5 months ago I made the awful decision to get eyelash extensions done, and a few hours later I had a little puffiness on my eyelids but nothing severe and it went away.. Then I got a fill done 4 weeks later and I had a reaction of BAD swelling and redness an hour or so later.. The extentionist had said it could be my eyes getting used to the extension so told me to wait a day and see if it goes away.. I did not. She was unable to remove them the following day, so I had to wait a whole extra day for her to remove them, and my eyelids were extremely swollen.. My left more so than my right. I had flaky eyelids, itchy, red, some crusting.. Typical blepharitis symptoms. So I start cleansing daily and heat, as recommended by Google, and see my Optometrist who says she isn't sue what it is.. Prescribes me Tobradex and Lotemax.. Tobradex worked for me about 6 days after I started using it and such an amazing difference.. But had to stop be use my eye pressure got high.. So that was disappointing sad I've been on doxycycline now for 1 month, doctor put me on prednisone for 10 days..nothing..i was on a medication for staph infection..i was in erythromycin..I was doing heat but I swell up more when heat is applied, and along my lash line developed broken skin, so had to stop heat anyways. I've been given hydrocortisone cream 1%..not helping.. And for the past 4 months or so the ONLY symptom I've had is the swelling along my lash line, and about 1/4" wide, and slightly puffy up to my eyebrow bone. I'm so frustrated, as I don't think this is blepharitis anymore.. I DO NOT have any of the classic symptoms except swelling. Is it possibly I don't have blepharitis anymore and now battling some sort of mystery? Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to the eyelash glue? But if it's an allergy is it not subsiding? It's been 6.5 months of constant eyelid swelling in one eye only..and I've Been taking antihistamines with no result sad so confused and lost

Hi Jamie, I also think I have blepharitis. I went to the doctor when they were so bad I had trouble seeing. The doctor told me I had conjunctivitis ? So I started looking online for answers. First I found wet ones, but they made no difference. I then heard about baby shampoo, which worked ok, my eyes were still running but at least I could see. My eyes were also very sensitive to sunlight, and I live in Australia.  I also read that hydroxybenzoate is the magic ingredient, so I now use a foam eye wash from the chemist every morning for my eyelids and then follow with a cream with the same ingredient. My eyes now look normal with no swelling and no undereye puffiness or wrinkling my the constant watery eyes. I hope that helps. I don't think doctors know what to give you but just take your money.

    Thank You

Hi Claire, thanks for replying smile although mine seems to differ from yours, as I only have the swelling.. Could I ask what wash and cream you had used with the ingredient in it? I am from Canada, so hopefully I can find something similar or the same here smile

And is a chemist the same as a pharmacist? And do I need a prescription or is it just available at any pharmacy? I am willing to try anything, and getting a blephex treatment done next week..probably going to be a waste of money but that's how desperate I am sad I am so glad yours has cleared up and you found something that works for you!! I hope I'm just as lucky

Hi Jamie, a chemist is a pharmacy, and no you don't need a prescription . Just make sure what they suggest has the hydroxybenzoate in it as that seems to be the magic ingredient . I think I was lucky that day, as I was desperate and the pharmacy took one look at my eyes and suggested the foam eye wash. Good luck. I would tell you the name of the product but this is monitored and they would delete it.

I thought I had Blepharitis.. and took in all the suggestions, baby shampoo, disposable mascara wands.  I finally saw the eye Dr. and I had Mybibea gland disfunction.  Eyes are made of tears, mucus and oil glands.  If those oil glands get plugged, oh boy..you are in for it.  Swelling, itchy, cracks between eye lashes, flakes of crust. I was in agony.  He sold me a bead mask I head in the mirowave for 17 sec..and I put that on morning and night.. then I got ointment to spread on the upper and lower margins called  TobraDex.  Keep make up off for two weeks.  I use the baby shampoo diluted in water to wash any mascara off ( I cheat a little on the tips) and this is the best make up remover ever!. Also someone recommended only Clinique brand mascara..and so far things are looking up.  I DID make the mistake of puting on liquid eyeliner..and one lid festered up..so I won't be doing that again.  I had some previous ointment from the summer when I scratched my cornea removing a contact and out of desperation, I used it only to find out it had a bit of citric to it which made matters worse.  When in doubt, go visit the eye DR. is the best advice I can give.

Hey there.. Thanks for your reply.. I had also been using a bead eye mask morning and night and using Tobradex morning and night after my eye washing.. All the heat did was make my eyelid swelled even more sad so had to stop. I'm glad to hear it worked for you
