Appendicitis or something else?

Hi, I'm female, 46. For the last few months, when lying on my right side in bed reading, I get this excruciating twisting sort of bulging pain near my hip. IT feels like something is going to burst if I move. I can't think how else to describe it. When I move (in agony) it eventually subsides. For the next few days the area feels really bruised as if I've been punched. It happens every so often but is becoming more frequent, only on the right side and only when I lie in that position.

I thought at first kidney pain, appendix or ovarian pain but because it's sporadic I don't think it can be.

Can anyone shed any light please?

If I were you I would go to the doctors about it, don't leave it, you could have a grummbling appendicitis, if left also your appendix can burst, releasing poisons into your system, i really do not want to alarm you, but it can be fatal if you have a burts appendix and it's not seen to right away. Even if it's just to put your mind at rest go to the doctors, that's what they are there for. I hope that it turns out to be something that can be sorted for you and your pain goes. Good luck.

This is v.interesting - for the last few years I've been getting a terrible ache in my right hand side, it subsides for a while then reoccurs. I eventually went to docs and was told I was not presenting as appendix and since there isn't anything else in that region 'it must be something my gut doesn't like'. It still occurs and I've given up asking. BTW I'm also a coeliac, with osteoporosis and underactive thyroid.

Hmm of course there is another trouble spot in that area, it's called the Terminal Ileum and it's associated Ileocecal Valve, a prime spot for a touch of Crohn's Disease (not that I'm saying that's what your problem is) smile

And not forgetting (like the man / women above with problems in the Illiac Fossa area) swollen Lymph nodes cause niggles. Ahem,, anyway :D

been for a scan this morning and no kidney stones or bladder problems. Asked them to check for ovarian probs and as far as they could see nothing there either. Still got the nasty pain in the area of my appendix - several months now and sporadic so I realise it's not dangerous. Annoying though. I'll ask GP about it at next pointment.
