Appointment with Consultant Haematologist

Dear All,
On Thursday 16th August I had an appointment with a Consultant Haematologist. Here is a summary of my appointment:
Apixaban is her preferred Anticoagulation medication. Therapeutic dose of 2.5 mg twice daily. There is less of a risk of an internal bleed than that posed by Rivaroxaban.
Alcohol does not impede the function of Apixaban.
Patients taking Apixaban need to have a Liver function test twice a year.
An antidote has been manufactured and is at the Licensing stage, with approval imminent.
Due to the fact that I have had 4 DVT's in my right calf, I now have PTS (Post Thrombotic Syndrome). Specially measured compression stockings prescribed to assist with this. Activa Class 2 below knee, black, in medium
Size.
I was then sent to the Phlebotomists to have a significant amount of blood taken for extensive range of tests, including genetic screening, liver function tests and assays.
I return on 25th October for the results of the tests and will share the findings.
Good luck to all on your Anticoagulation journey!
Regards
Nigel

Wow, you have such a great attitude. I'm on these boards because my boyfriend is on anticoagulants due to a history of DVTs and PEs. He had been on warfarin forever but his hematologist switched him to apaxiban because his INR levels were really erratic. It was attributed to his drinking, but presumably since he maintained the same levels of alcohol intake, I would have thought there would have been no fluctuation. Then a couple weeks after he was off the warfarin he asked me to pick him up some more bee pollen at the store because he had run out. As I know that even natural substances can interact with medications, I looked it up first. Turns out bee pollen affects warfarin's effects (and is really unnecessary and may have other dangers). Hard-headed as he is, he's continuing with the bee pollen, so I'm happy that he's on apaxiban now. Good luck to you and I'll be happy to read about your findings.

There are so many contra-indications with Warfarin that significantly impact upon a patients INR.
The NOACS differ in the way that they work, removing dietary and medication interference, and also the need for regular INR blood tests.
Good luck to your boyfriend!

Thanks for your update. I am also on Apixaban for life and take the 2 x 2.5mg daily dose. I was also prescribed the stockings and wear them daily and will do so for at least 2 years ( I get mine on prescription a couple of pairs every 3 months). They do different colours and also toeless ones to wear with sandals. Surprised you did not get all the blood tests at the time of your clot but hope all goes well for you.
I was also told to get liver function test twice a year by the hospital but had to argue with my GP over that but eventually he gave me one.
Look forward to your update and hope the stockings are helping.
