Aqua aerobics

Posted , 10 users are following.

I am now  12 weeks pst op after THR no real complications apart from bad knee ,but had steroid injection in that last week to help with the pain whilst the knee realigns itself which does seem to be working .

Is it safe to do some aqua aerobics now  or is it too soon ??

      Hi Annette (again)

sorry the previous reply shot off the screen uninvited as I was attempting a spelling error! Basically I am trying to determine just what is, or isn't, advised. For instance when,or if I can slop through calf deep estuary mud to get to my boat and then can I pull and push quite heavy things around while manoeuvring. Also would like to eventually ride my veteran motor cycle but this requires kick starting, nobody seems able to advise if or when this may be possible.

So perhaps you may find a source of advice that is relevant for me, if so, or if anyone else wishes to comment, then please do?

Chris, I would think a physiotherapist that works with hip replacement patients would be able to advise you what you can do at different stages of your recovery...I know the one I go to is great...since she works directly with me she is aware how I am progressing and can therefore make informed recommendations...it is hard to give definative advice when we don't know your medical/surgery history, therefore I would seek out a therapist, even if for one consultation so they can put you through a series of tests and then make an informed decision. Good luck and hope you are back in full swing soon!

You still have to think about movements  - eg. moving across the midline and getting in and out of the pool. With the steroid injection then you have to think about infection and I would leave it for 7-10 days to be on the safe side.

When you do go I would tell the leader about your surgery, maybe watch a class to see what movements she uses and then decide whether that class fits you or not. Some areas do a GP referral for exercise where they help you to choose the right combination of exercises for you, I would ask about anything in your area.

    Hope everything settles down.

Ginger did you have the anterior approach hip replacement.?  I have heard that can really add to problems with a knee because they have to twist it when doing the surgery on the Hip..I have a really bad knee and this scares me to go on with the anterior approach plus some have the nerve pain in the front of the leg...Just wondering if this is the procedure you had

Greetings Sue,  Yes I did have the anterior THR.Believe me I would not do that type again.

I would have the lateral approach.

I have numbness left side of my leg. That goes over the knee. I have femoral neral nerve issues.

My knee hurt add much as my hip surgery.which surprised me.Also I was swollen from my hip to my toes. It wasn't until I had the injection of steroids that made life possible..

Really search the different methods and choose what's best for you. Believe me your knee will be hurting really bad after if you have the anterior THRsad

Hi again I did have my right hip done about 4 years ago..The doctor used the super-path approach..It was great and still is..My knee had also bothered me and its much better since the hip surgery..The problem is my doctor mover to arizona to teach the method and im in southern il with the closet dr that does this type surgery in Nashville tn..That is the procedure I want done on the left hip..I have heard so much bad stuff about the anterior that I just dont want to do it..I also have a bad back and twisting and pulling the hip out of socket when doing this wont help that problem either..With the super -path the muscle is not cut or nothing is twisted and in a week I was driving and it doesnt bother me at all I would never know it wasnt my own hip...So not sure where you live but if you ever need another surgery look for a dr that does super-path approach ...My knee now is terrible so I cant afford to make it any worse.probably couldnt walk at all even with a good new hip..thans for info

Hi, Haven't herd about. Super path .where is the incision?.. able to drive in a week , that's amazing .

I'm five months now.Still can't pick up that leg when I'm sitting to put it my jeans. However I can stand Ann's March lifting that in my cardio class.

I had my lunar spine totally re built three yrs. Ago.

I had six lamunectomuy sp off.and six spinal fusions.b/c couldn't sit on both sides my butt, my spine bowed out.So I also had that straightened with 8 bars and screws. The doctor also found two holes in the spinal cord with the dura pushing through. So he had to repair it. I have not had any trouble since surgery with the back.

This ortho doctor was careful not to undue that surgery. S since they do a lot of hammering.

Not that I had much to complain about with my THR, still not driving after 8 weeks, but within a week or two I'll be able to.....BUT I will never complain again after reading about your recent surgeries...I know when I have it good.....best of luck!

Ginger, what is the lateral approach....is that the same as posterior...

So many do very good with Anterior but I sure haven't.and I know you have your issues.

Read about your back surgery(s) and omg, my MRI's read like science fiction stories of the back, but I won't do any more surgery unless I'm run over and unconsous. I've heard some good stories on those back surgeries and heard some horror ones too.

I never thought they were such a crapshoot until this hip.

Those steroids can help, but can do a lot of bone damage too, so caution.

I've said so much about my issues, that I'm worn out.....j
